automatic climate control

User error, duh!!!!!!!

With a cabriolet, 'auto' made little sense. Now I can separately turn on either the air conditioner or heater as needed.
Turning off the 'auto' required pushing 2 of the buttons simultaneously, but I don't recall which ones (maybe auto and fan or auto and temp?).
When you find the right combination, the auto light turns off and control of the heater/AC is done through the economy switch, then manually select the temperature up/down and fan speed as required.

It was fairly simple and did require holding down the auto button, with possibly another control button. I recall inadvertently turning the auto control back on a few times, but was able to turn it back to manual control while stopped at the next traffic light.
MB made changes to the CLK climate control module along the way and wonder if turning off the auto feature might have something to do with your 1999 model year.
Couple of of additional suggestions.
Look for an older post between (e.g. 2001 and 2003) in this forum and others. The subject may have been about auto climate control or undocumented things you could do. Also check the E class forums of that period.
I've had good success getting specific information/advice from asking the dealer service department manager/shop foreman.
You could also try call calling the MB-USA 800 support line.

I have a question in return. Does anyone here experience similar problem in that when in rains, the windscreen fogs up really easily and without turning on the a/c, it's very difficult to clear. I have tried tried just about every permutation on the climate control panel. Could it be a blocked vent?
