CLK55 valve noise

Hey all,

In the mornings and after work, Im noticing valve noise when I first start up my car. It seems to go away after 30 seconds or so but I dont think it goes away completely. The oil level is normal as I just changed the oil. Any ideas as what may cause this or is this normal for these cars? Do these cars have or require valve adjustment?

I do want to point out that I am not talking about the noise that comes out of the little box on the fron drivers side of the car. Not sure what its called but Im thinking its something emissions related where it starts to tick for a while and shuts off.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds like it could be possibly a lifter sticking and gets better once it pumps up, but still not 100% afterwards. As far as i can remember there is no valve adjustment due to the hydraulic lifters.

I get a clatter every so often but haven't heard of any problem/fix for it either. These motors are overhead cams with roller rockers..... no lifters. May be carbon buildup on the valves??

2 possibilities. Carbon build up on the piston crowns or a hydraulic lifter is sticking/bleeding down.

Both will be noisy on cold start but on the lifter would be heard (possibly) when the engine is hot. If it sounds very even (every cylinder) then I would start with a carbon clean.

Get 2 cans of upper engine cleaner, get the engine very hot and then apply as per instructions. take the car for a drive with high load/hi rpm and see how you go from there.

As for the lifters, make sure you use a good synthetic and change regularly, if they continue to be noisy then best to change all of them if you can't pinpoint which bank it is.

Any idea on what it may cost to replace the lifters if needed?

well it wont be cheap. the "lifters" are not the traditional design you would expect to see. They are more of a hydraulic insulator that rides between the valve and the rocker and NOT between the cam and the rocker. I dont think they can be ordered separately from the rocker assembly. There is no adjustment for valve lash.
