W or S mode?

I have a 99 CLK 320 and have a question about the 'W' and 'S' driving modes. Is any setting better than the other, aside from driving/performance/response preferences? Is it better for the transmission lifespan to have it in one setting or the other?

'W' is winter mode and 'S' is standard mode. All that 'W' does is start the car in 2nd gear instead of 1st, for more stability in poor conditions (snow, excessive rain, etc).

I don't think one is better than the other as far as transmission life and wear is concerned.

I always thought "W" was for "Wimp" and "S" was for "Stud"!

Just kidding.

I agree with O-Dawg - it is purely "driving / performance / response" and (weather conditions) preference.

I use both, depending on my mood and my passengers'.

actually, "W" is winter and "S" is summer. Don't ask me about the rest of the year!

Yep, W is for winter/icy conditions and S is for standard driving...

Just use this idea.... W for Winter - S for Summer

Yeah they are all right on the dot.

If you didn't notice....

Your gear will shift up at a higher REP on Winter mode then S mode. This is because to prevent over spining of the wheels. This kinda prevents the full power support to the wheels from the engine. (more rep more gas)

On S mode the Gear will shift right on...

If you want to.....try to accel your car up to 50mph from stop on both modes...U can feel that your car picks up speed faster on S mode.

I just put on S mode most of the time unless it rains or snows...

I haven't noticed a difference in mileage, but I'll calculate my mpg this tank in W. I get 22-24 mpg in S.

I'm gonna be a smart *** here and point out that "W" stands for Wet and "S" stands for Standard according to the manual. Don't really notice the difference. I just basically drive more carefully when it's wet out.
