Engine Fan Warning Light? A little help please...

Got this lovely message on the dash today. Anyone know what this could be? I checked under the hood, and the fan is still spinning. It does look like it may be spinning a little bit slower than usual though. TIA.... Rick

There are two electric fans, are both of them spinning? To test them, with the car off, insert key and turn ignition to the second position. This will illuminate the dash lights.

Press and hold both "auto" buttons on the climate control unit for approximately 10 seconds and then let go. Both auxiliary fans should then turn on. If that doesn’t work, try it again, but hold the auto buttons for 20 seconds.

If only one fan spins, post back, there is a problem. The odds that both fans do not spin during this test are low. Both fans would have to be broken for that to occur.

No kidding? 2 fans under the hood? I saw just the one in the normal place in front of the engine... I'll check more closely in the am, and get back to you... I did drive the car for a few hours tonight, and the message didn't pop up, nor did the temp go any higher than normal.... I'm hoping it's just a gremlin to go along with my intermittent ABS/Bas light.. lol...

Ok I checked again, and there is only one fan in front of the engine. The light appeared again this morning, so I'm thinking the fan is going bad. It's trying to spin, but it's turning pretty slowly, and it seems to cut out or sputter... I'm thinking it's not a relay because then it just wouldn't work at all... I spilled a lot of oil onto the fan motor last week due to an improperly seated o ring on the filter, so I'm thinking that may have something to do with it...

Its an electric fan so make sure that the fan connector is clean and free of oil. It could be shorting out ( hopefully) or the fan motor could be dying due to the oil spill. I would start at the connector first though.

Attached is a photo of the front of my CLK. The hood is up, exposing two electric fans. Those are in addition to the mechanical fan, which is on the opposite side of the radiator. I have a 430 and you have a 320, so the two may be completely different. I'm guessing the code must be due to an electric fan mishap because I don't know how the vehicle electronics would know whether a mechanical fan is running. Open your hood and take a look. If you see two fans as shown in the photo, then you may want to perform the test I supplied. The test takes a few seconds. Since it’s performed with the car off, you won't have to leave your car to determine if the fans are running - you'll hear them.

Thanks for the pic, and the help. Mine is totally different, only one electric fan on the backside of the radiator... I just ordered a new fan from autohaus, so I'll post an update in a few days... Fan with 2nd day shipping still $100 less than the dealer. Do those guys at the dealer realize there is a place called the interweb where you can buy things, or do they just not care about totally ripping people off... lol...

Ok, I'm back in business. Put the new fan in, plugged it in, and it's good to go. Very easy DIY job, took about 25 minutes from start to finsh. 2 clips, 3 srcews, and one electrical connector and that's it. I drove around yesterday , and today, and it seems fine. No warning lights, and the temp gauge is right where it normally is... Knock on wood... lol... Thanks again...
