2001 CLK 55
Broken A/C button, what to do

I have a 2001 CLK. The AC buttons that control the fan speed have collapsed making them unable to press due to wear and tear....
The shop told me that Mercedes Benz only sells the unit as a whole which costs $1200.
Anyone have any advice on replacing just the buttons?
