Steering Damper Orientation

I was removing and replacing my steering damper this morning and someone showed up at a critical time. I lost track of how the steering damper was oriented as I took off the old one. Now I can't remember if the piston end goes on the right or the left side of the car (or if it even matters). I currently have the new one bolted in with the piston end on the right side.

Thanks for you response.

99CLK320,
Do a Search for steering damper and you will probably find a thread with some pictures

I think you have it right. The thicker side of the damper hooks to the driver side and piston-end hooks to the passenger side.

Would you by any chance have the torque specs for the two bolts?

I sure don't. The bolt heads take a 16mm wrench/socket. I'm guessing about 50Nm or 40 ft#. I have an inquiry into the local M-B service mangler.

What I do notice when I put the new one on is that the driver's side end fit perfectly in the bracket.

OK, Here's the update. After calling four different dealerships and having their service departments either shuffle me off to voicemail, referred to startech.com (at $18 for 24 hours), or otherwise be "unavailable," I was left to the resources of my own trial and error methods. The answer is that the piston side goes on the driver's side and attaches to the bracket on the frame and the cylinder side attaches to the steering drag link.

If you flip it the other way, the bulbous end of the piston side interferes with the steering drag link and the other end doesn't quite fit into the frame-mounted bracket.

Of course, the proper torque is still a mystery. Last thing - there was thread locker on both bolts. I also used thread locker when re-assembling.

Steering Damper

You have it right.Fixed side of the damper to the bracket, piston side to the drag link. The bolt torques are 40 Nm/29 ft.lbs. for both.

Here's an interesting forum post with PICTURES!!!!!

The steering damper is mounted as I eventually did it - piston end to the frame-mounted bracket and the long end to the drag link. Thanks, jimpott, for the torque settings.
