Antenna help Newbie 2000 clk

I left the BMW world so I need some help.
The car I bought looks like the protective *** or boot call it on the rear of the roof has come of but the wire is still there. Is look like just the boot came off that protects it. I dont mind getting a new on they have a few cheep one for 7.00 that do I get screw in type but I need to know the thread size. What I also need to know is how to take it out pull or turn.
Since the boot is gone I guess I can use a flat head screw driver at the base and spin it out. My other question is I have no AM reception for traffic reports, could this be the reasoin why FM works fine.

The reason you have bad AM reception is not due to the amplifier, it's the MB radio that was designed with European specs in mind. When you are trying to tune into a US station, the radio will not lock into the exact frequency. Living in Boston, you are probably trying to get AM 1030 WBZ. The radio will tune to 1029.7 or 1030.2 (a .5 span in frequency tuning). Neither one will be clear and will seem to fade in and out. Later MB radios addressed this issue. If you live in a different part of the country and your AM stations are clear, you are just lucky that the frequency is close to the radio preset intervals.

I found this post looks like I was right

I found this from another post I will try it...

After 10 years I have finally sovled the problem of poor radio reception in my 208 CLK. After reading posts and articles on the antenna booster and then talking to the local shop I use, I decided the problem had to be related to the antenna booster. Posts indicated many were bad and the shop told me as I continued to press the issue over the years they had also seen problems with the connections. I pulled the panel to get to the antenna booster (above passenger side rear seat) to take a good look at the booster and check connectors before I planned on ordering a new booster. I unplugged the connectors and re- plugged them back in and problem was solved. I now get stations clearly that previouly were weak and local AM stations never have the periodic static they did at times in the past. The total cost of solving the problem was $0 and about 1/2 of my time when I finally figured it out. I am coming up on 11 years with the car and it is unbelievable I put up with this for so long and no one could quickly address it depite how many times I brought it up. I have become convinced over the years that there are common problems well known to Mercedes and the dealers they just do not want to talk about and problems that involved owners know more about solving than service departments. Hence the importance of posting not only the problem but solution when found. Hope this helps others. If you want info on where the antenna booster is and how to get to it see post at https://mbworld.org/forums/clk-class...placement.html

Well it turns out the radio antenna cable was connected to the GPS/telphone antenna line and the GSP line was connecto to the back of the radio. I swaped it and now I got AM and better FM... You got to love some aftermarket sounds sytem installers

2002 Mercedes Benz CLK320
Radio Antenna Amplifier

Thanks for the post and the DIY on the antenna amplifier. Just bought a 2002 CLK 320, FM reception was OK but on AM got nothing but static. Since I am a "Talk Radio" guy and sometimes like to listen to the Seattle Mariners lose really wanted to get the AM fixed. Read your post about simply disconnecting the antenna amplifier then reconnecting it. With your DIY instructions the job took about 20 minutes and now I have great AM reception and the FM reception is even better. Thanks!!!!
