Bumper problem

I have a 2003 CLK430 convert. only 3 months old. I noticed under the front bumper where the opening is the is a horizontal piece inside the opening is held on by two (verticle)brackets. One of the brackets is cracked right in the middle and the piece is loose. I took it to my mechanic who said it is a problem with the AMG pkg and that he can fix it but there is a good chance it will break again. He suggested replacing the AMG bumper with a older model which doesnt have the same problem. I love the look of the car as stock, so I told him to fix it. Has anyone else had this problem?? Is there another fix to it??

I'm attaching a picture so you can see the piece I am talking about. This is not my car. Look at the piece going accross the opening underneath.

Thanks

hmm... i thought there were 3 verticle brackets???

I would suggest just fixing it. I'm not sure what he meant by swapping it out with an older model... i'm sure they are made with the same materials. But definitely don't swap it to a non-AMG bumper...

Did you hit anything with your bumper up front? like those parking cement blocks? those blocks will tear the ***** outta your front bumpers... trust me... i was just reminded of it yesterday while at the gym... it sounded like the bumper was gonna crack in half and fall right off... 95% of the time, the center strip just pops off, and i needa get outta the car to pop it back in place. but, after hitting one too many times, my bumper is cracked at the bottom... sigh... maybe i should get some fiberglass and repair it... hmmm...

Could be three brackets. I diid have an unfortunate incident with a cement parking thing. There was actually a piece of rebar about 4" above the cement. It got caught under the bumper(I didn't even know until I backed up. I heard the thud and thought the bumper would be hanging. I didn't think that could cause the bracket to break (because it just caught the very bottom of the bumper, no where near the bracket). But now I am thinking that was probably it. I kinda hope that is what caused it as I will never get that close to a cement thing again. I am more afraid that it is one of those things that just the vibration of driving knocks loose.

Common problem on CLK430 cars. The only solution is to learn not to pull into parking spaces too far.

Agreed. How hard is it to not drive into a parking block? If you truely care about your car you'd be more cautious and take notice when you're parking. That to me is like throwing your car door into a parking meter. Can't imagine why people do either.

Bottom line, pay more attention and problem solved.
