clk 230k convertible
advice clk convertible w208
I am looking to buy a CLK convertible rather tempted by the sensible asking prices. Are there any issues I should look out for? what about auto gearbox reliability are they all seqential or tiptronic?.or should I buy a manuel.
Any help much appreciated looking forward to buying my first Mercedes.

If you’re in the US, manual transmissions were not available and Mercedes (who is the only manufacturer I know of who builds their own transmissions) did not build a sequential box for regular CLKs. If you’re in the US, and you want a W208, I recommend a 2001/2002 CLK. If you like power, a 55 or a 430 – and the 55 is a lot more powerful. When maintained, the drive trains are very reliable. There are normal maintenance items and the odd bits that fail (such as the CPS, which I have never had go out) are well known and inexpensive – provided you do the work yourself. This link will tell you a lot about the first generation CLK.
If you want a second generation CLK, beware the early 350s and 550s. The 550 is a beast. The CLK63 is a thermonuclear beast, but the early 63s had serious top end issues. The issues are well known and can be repaired, but it will not be cheap.
