lights flash and car will not unlock

lights flash and car will not unlock
My CLK 240 Elegance (I can think of some other choice names right now) started acting stupid tonight.
Lights started flashing for no reason. I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere in an area where there is no recorded crime in the last 5 years. Nobody is touching the car. I have been watching it.
I unlocked the car then locked it. All good. 5 minutes later flashing again - ditto lock unlock. Did this 4 or 5 times in total.
Now the car is flashing, but the key and the spare remote which both worked just fine will not unlock the car.
Its blowing a gale outside and its wet English weather at its best.
Anyone have a clue about what is going on? The battery will be flat before the storm blows itself out and one day before Xmas with half my shopping outstanding its about the worst time on the planet for this to happen.
