Key remotes can be reprogrammed?
I saw these listing on ebay:

Are they assuming that the remotes can be reprogrammed? Do I have to take it to a dealer to get that done?
It would be scary that someone can clone ur key with one of these.

the dealer would need to reprogram the key for you.
it is easy to get duplicate infra-red keys, but a dealer has to do the programming.
and if you ever lose a key, you can simply have the dealer program the computer in ur car not to recognize/accept the lost key.
its a pretty secure system, so i wouldn't worry too much about it...

to program a new key... you could always lie and say, "hey, all of a sudden, my key doesn't work anymore"

hmm...i was just looking at getting a replacement key for my clk and called the dealer (mb of orlando) and the guys there said they couldnt reprogram any of the keys. i've heard of a lot of people doing it though, maybe they're just stupid :-D the guy (pat) was like "yea, i just asked some of the other guys and we're pretty sure we can't do it, we have a bunch of them just layin around, it's practically impossible" i was looking at this (different type) but i can probably just get this one and say that it randomly died on me

Can some one confirm that? I don't recall reading that anywhere in my manual.

Smart Keys CANNOT be reprogrammed.
M-class keys can be programmed to the vehicle. Some of the newer cars can be programmed to the key. It depends on the model. Sometimes "learning" will take 30-45 minutes of the car sitting with the key in the ignition. This is mostly for Keyless Go cars, though.

.............ok. I have actually bought one of those keys from ebay, then I took it to the dealer to program. The dealer is RBM of Atlanta. I went all the way to the manager and was told emphatically..........IT IS NOT POSSIBLE. I understand that dealers don't always know what they are talking about. But based on my experience, I will say that the keys cannot be re-programmed. If infact someone has ACTUALLY bought a key from ebay or anywhere else and has ACTUALLY had it reprogrammed, then let us know which dealer you went to and who at the dealership did it for you and we will all rush there. I have a useless key from ebay, sitting in my drawer that I will like to program.
