2002 CLK 430 Key not being recognized

2002 CLK 430 Key not being recognized
With a new battery installed, my doors are unlocking exactly as they should without issue.
After inserting the key fob in the ignition port, there is no "click" or release sound to allow the key to turn. Multiple attempts eventually end in success, but I fear one of these days, I will find myself stranded. I've cleaned the lenses which never really appeared obstructed by dirt in the first place.
Any thoughts as to the cause or suggested course of action? Has anyone else experienced this issue? Thanks for the help
