mine have done it in the past, and it has always been temperature related.....i would have a couple lights go out or not change as quickly when its god-awful cold outside....youre in Cali so im guessing such is not the case for you.

................Very common problem with an unnexpectedly expensive fix. Sometimes after your car warms up, the truncated numbers may illuminate again, but ultimately, your entire cluster will need to be replaced. No, there are no other fixes. I hope your car is underwarranty.

1 ) How much is a new cluster?
2) Doesn't the cluster remove by pulling straight out towards the steering wheel?
3) What happens in regard to the mileage?

1. Dunno
2. Yes
3. You will need to get the new cluster synched with the car as to read the correct mileage.

Cluster Response

Here are some answers, maybe...

1. Assuming you have a 2000+ MY, was told the cluster is about $350, just for the part, install is an extra $89 (1 hour labor). By the way saw a cluster for sale on eBay last week, look in completed items, don't remember what it sold for.

2. Cluster does pull straight out, it is held in by 4 clips (2 on top, 2 on bottom). You maybe be able to "pull" it out with your hands, but probably need to "hook" the sides and pull. Clips do not need to be depressed to release.

3. Finally, I have a MY 1998, have removed the cluster and unplugged it, when replugged everything worked fine, mileage, trip and all. MY 2000+ may be different.

Hope that helps

Rick

I believe STeve can get clusters for the clk @ a much cheaper price than the dealer, if yours is 98 or 99 he can get you a 2k but you have to change your steering wheel also.

I had this problem. My dealer said it was caused by the heat of the bulbs and replaced the bulbs with those with lower wattage. Seemed to work. There is supposedly a TSB out for this.

leds bad (spelled it wrong the first time)

Did you have it related to outside temp. Mine only started to act up when it got cold outside. It is also only the temp guage and the time and gear position. The main dash is unaffected.
Thanks,
bob

Like you, it was the time and temp indicators, but it did not seem to be temperature related. The other indicators worked fine. Ask your dealer to look it up. Also, search the archives on mbshop.com. You may find some posts on this.

Mine has a blacked out line only one pixel wide right over the minutes in the time. I noticed it only goes out when the car is hot (ie parked in the sun on a warm day).
