Fuel gauge, sending unit

I've researched enough to find out that the fuel sending unit is a VERY common problem. BUT... I have not found a cheap fix? I hate to just stick two/one sending units or whatever in it, when the problem is supposedly just contacts? Where are these contacts, and can the be repaired or replaced?

The vehicle is a 2002 CLK 430 with 58,000 miles.

Oh yeah.... the problem is that the gauge won't go to full, then after 100ish miles or less, I'm back on empty.

Thanks!

I had the elusive sender unit strange readings too , twice ! and resolved it as many do by just cleaning the contacts and knowing what caused the issue in the first place. With 170K miles on the car it is still behaving on the original sender unit.

The cause I found for the strange fuel level readings is high-sulphur petrol which is often found in less branded petrol stations on the UK. We do not have the different grades that the US have just standard and higher performance fuels. I found that if I fill up with the non-brand fuel usually from Supermarkets it gave me a strange fuel level readings. However I have used them on occasion and my car is still fine now.

To resolve my issue, I used loads of fuel injection cleaner, get the good brands like Slick 50 and Chevron, these break down the deposites including inside the fule tank sensors and over about 2-3 weeks you should see the gauge behave again. Use quality fuels too like BP, Shell until your gauge is back to normal.
