Another Engine Vibration Question?

Like many others, my CLK320 1998 seems to idle rough. But I don't think it is the idle. When I stop the car at a light or anywhere, the car vibrates/shakes slightly but very noticeably. The RPM's do not appear to be changing, but are steady at the idle "mark". I am wondering if it is sparkplug, mass air meter, or motor mounts, but MB seems to think nothing is wrong..... Anybody have the problem and gotten it fixed? It's very irritating (mostly because I think something is wrong or damaging the engine). Thanks

Rick

CLK 430
I have a similar problem with my 01 CLK 430. What I get, is a throbbing vibration that can be felt through the sterring wheel. It does not do this when the car is in park, only when I am stopped with my foot on the brake. Of course, dealer says nothing is wrong. Next time I go back, I'm going to have them check it again.

Could motor mounts be DIY, or is this something that requires lifting the engine????

The engine has to be raised up a bit to do the mounts...its best done on a lift with the engine being raised from underneath.

This is a normal feeling with many Mercedes motors, however it is important to have it checked out to make sure that there is nothing wrong i.e. motor mounts, plugs, misfires, etc.

I try to put a bottle of Redline's fuel treatment cleaner in every 2,000-5,000 miles to help reduce this to a minimum.

Thanks,

Ben

CLK 230 Kompressor
Mine is a baby clk 230 kompressor, and the 4 cylinder is expectedly a bit rough. I had the engine mountings changed and things smoothed out somewhat. I also noticed that new engine oil also has a "smoothing effect" that goes away after about 1500 miles. Currently using Mobil 1.
I am surprised that even the larger motors vibrate roughly at idle.

What you descibe is not normal. The shaky idle/lean-mis should only be noticable when OUT of gear, as when the engine is under load(in gear) it should be smooth and you should not be feeling throbbing in the steering wheel.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. it was the engine mounts. I had them replaced (including the one for transmission and I get no vibration now.)

Im telling you its a very likely chance that its the mounts..replace those and then see if your still experiencing it. Open your hood and reg your engine using the throttle cable and see how much it jumps...

hey Antonio...

What did the job cost you? How many mounts were broken and what type of symptoms did you have?? Shaking at low speed and idle....

Thanks,

Rick

same problem

I had the same problem (vibration at P, N, D with engine idling) and I took my car to the dealer but they said the car was fine, that was a few months ago. The vibration went away about 1 1/2 month later and I haven't noticed any vibration now.

For the engine mount, my car is still under warranty, so I guess it is covered by the warranty, right? but the problem is how to address this to the dealer if they keep saying the car is okay?
