Enclosed is a functional diagram of how the remote trunk locking/unlocking system works.
From this, if you have good troubleshooting, diagnostic, DIY repair skills you'll have the trunk release working in short order (e.g. pneumatic or electrical).
Notes:
If you have a coupe, ignore the CANBus connection to the N52 power top/roll-bar controller. It's purpose is only as an interlock to keep the soft top case cover and trunk lid from colliding, when opening/closing the roof.
Not shown in the enclosed thumbnail, is that MY 2001+ W208s, implemented an emergency trunk open button inside the trunk. There is a TSB, relating to the routing of the wiring of this new feature rubbing against sharp edges, shorting and causing issues with the trunk release.

Check the positioning of the lock mechanism. Make sure the bolts are still fully tight. You may want to untighten them and pull the entire unit towards the ground as far as possible and then retighten. The reason for this is that I've noticed that if my trunk is full and there's something pressing against the trunk lid, my Fob, nor inside button will release the lid. Nothing happens. But if I then apply downward pressure to the trunk lid, everything works as it should. Took this happening a few times before I figured out that it was pressure on the locking mechanism that was causing the issue.
