CLK Navigation upgrade (need Help)

hello.. My 2001 clk320 (US Version) has the radio/tape/cdchanger unit inside (see picture) I want to install the navigation unit which I have seen on many 2001 clk's on ebay (see picture). I was wanting to know if the navigation/radio unit would fit my dash. Also.. I'm having a major problem finding a part number for this unit. I even tried contacting my local dealer but they are idiots (really they are).

Thanks

If you go through the dealer, you'll end up paying thousands for the part, so don't waste your time. Instead, contact Steve (one of the boards sponsors) at steve@mbenznl.com

He's the guy to go to for this upgrade (as well as many others) and has performed the upgrade on many forum member's cars (including my own).

Hey, if the top pic is your car, it is not a 2001 CLK320, but a '99. Can tell by the steering wheel that does not have radio controls, and the fact that convertible was first introduced in '99. Otherwise, any CLK NAV will fit the car, they all have the same dashboard/ radio insert area. Like Josh K says, check Steve NL or eBay. Much cheaper than going to the dealer (like $5,000 vs. $1,500). Word on the street is that a ML NAV can also retrofit to the CLK, and for cheaper than the regular CLK nav. It is worth considering..........

Let me know what you are going to do with your "old" radio, may be interested in buying.

Rick

The MCS is retrofitable but it's not as good a system as the COMAND in my opinion. If you do have a 99 (pre multifunction display and steering wheel controls) those can also be retrofitted to your car.

These are pictures I pulled from ebay just to show the radio..

I have a 2001 CLK320 with the phone and voice recog. so im wondering if the ML will work with the phone and voice.
(thanks for the heads up)

I am moving to LA from NC in 60days and I have a tendency to get lost a lot (in bad areas) so I hope I can get this soon.

I sent a email to Steve but I haven't received anything back from him.... when I do I will post back what he said (in case someone else is wondering)

Thanks

Cool, for phone and voice rec. the COMAND is best. COMAND also lets you send SMS messages from the navi screen. Just be patient - since steve has an upcoming US trip he's likely swamped with mail, but he'll get back to you.

Can send SMS msgs?? Awesome!! Josh, who installed your comand? Where did you put the GPS antenna? I'm also interested in this navi system. But I want it to look as stock as possible.

Steve installed my comand. My gps antenna is run off a splitter from the OEM teleaid gps antenna but it's much easier and just as effective to stick it under the dash. If you want OEM looking, Steve is the guy to do it, it works with the steering wheel controls, the multifunction display, and all OEM connectors are used, meaning even when you take the unit out, the wiring looks like factory wiring.

Harkonen,

Did Steve provide the GPS unit or did you make the purchase?

I am thinking of doing the modification also, I have an email into Steve as well.

Regards,
Ed

Steve only installs merchandise he sells - there would be no way for him to stand by his work or to control the quality of what he was installing if he installed other people's stuff ;0)

Sounds good to me, I sent him another email (different email address from the MB Club forums). They said he will be in So Cal soon.

I am now thinking about doing the steering wheel also so I can have the controls on the wheel.

Sped,

As Josh said, Steve provides EVERYTHING... all you need is the Nav CD for your area (CD#1 for Cali).

I highly recommend the MF Steering Wheel upgrade IF you have or get the MF instrument cluster. It adds so much to the overall system. Cough up the extra $... it's worth it!

I beleive Steve is in So Cal right now. Might be why he isn't getting a chance to reply to his email.

Pay for his airfare ..then You wont have to drive to OC plus time spent on the dreaded 15...
South west has very good rates !

Steve will be doing my install for the Nav and TV tuner in July (depending on his schedule). Has anyone used the TV tuner? I was hoping to watch the LA morning news while sitting in traffic however I’m wondering how well it holds a signal.

I've heard there are different models of navigation units.
What are the differences between the models?
Does anyone have the model numbers for these units?

Many Thanks,
Ed

Mercedes offers TWO Comands..EURO and USA
The EURO has RDS and a Britt chick on the Voice..also has a TV button so you can add a TV tuner if Needed ..great for DVDs

The USA comand has better AM than the EURO comand

I Have the EURO comand with RDS and Its Great!

Mark, Thanks for such a quick reply.
I am new to the Navigation systems, can you tell me what RDS is?

Do you have a tuner in your unit?

Regards,
Ed

RDS is Radio Display System that shows Radio song...stock market reports..and Other Info...and if you have a LATE cluster/combi it will ALSO read out in the Cluster/combi..
2000 on have the Updated Clusters/combi

Then add VA kit with a Nokia Phone...
With the VA kit you can change radio stations..CDs..tracks..etc
Also great with the cell phone..

Yep, Euro Command is much better. I personally listen to quite a bit of AM (sports talk, etc...) and the AM does suck on the Euro, but this is outweighed by the RDS, and the very cool Brittish accent .

RDS displays very nicely on the instrument cluster.

I listen to AM from time to time as well, and I've never had a problem with station reception. The frequency number is slightly different but it hasn't affected my reception at all
