Xenon headlights vs. Halogen
Is it a big deal to have the Xenon lights? Are they that much better than the standard lighting?
Are there aftermarket lights that are better or more inexpensive than the OEM Xenons?

the HID is definitely brighter than the regular halogen lamp. the HID will cover 20-30 % more than the halogen lamp.
yes there are after market xenon unit made by phillip that is even brighter than the oem. the brightness is really depends on the (i meant to say the "k" but forgot is it kilowatt?) wattage it uses.
but i'm not sure if there is any qualified shop in U.S. where you can install the phillip Xenon unit.
all the ads i seen are on the mags that my brother's gf brought over from Taiwan
if you are only looking to get the blue hue in the low beam...i suggest those ultra bright halogen (fake xenon, with blue tint) bulbs. its cheaper and most of the people can't tell from whats what. i had put two of those ultra bright halogen bulb in for my sister's CLK320. it works a little better than the regular halogen but not as bright as HID but is has a cool blue look
BTW i have HID on my C32. its bright as hell...heh

Just had the left Xenon light unit replaced while car at MB service for something else and MB "discovered" the malfunction, that the left light was not working. They replaced it under warranty.
The light unit costs $1,200 and the xenon bulb $140 according to MB parts.

Xenon are definitely the way to go
I used to think, "what's so nice about having $1,500 xenon lights?" After buying a car with these lights, I'm convinced that there is a major difference in visibility with them and will always get them going forward. Once you have them, you can't live without them.

those fake ones i talked about are just the halogen bulb with maybe a blue tint to it or bulbs with higher output. those are only 40 to 70 dollars.
a single bulb of the real Xenon like karl said it will cost around 150 - 170
the "k" stands for kelvin. it's the temperature at which the bulb is burning. this temperature is what gives it it's color.
