Mass Air Sensor
The dealership said it would cost $530 to replace my mass air sensor to get my check engine light to go off. This sounded a little high to me, so I looked around and found the part online for $300. If I ordered it online, would I have to take it to the dealership to get it calibrated or anything, or does it come calibrated?
Are there any aftermarket mass airs that are better, I did a search and it looks like alot of people have problems with them

No, I was going to get a K&N, but I actually stumbled across some threads on here where people might have had problems with their oil getting into the air meters, so I didn't get one...
I actually took it off and cleaned it out real good with some carb cleaner, disconnected the battery overnight, and am running ok for now. But, I think that it's probably just a matter of time before I'll have to break down and buy a new one.
Anyone know if you have to do anything to calibrate them, or you just pop it in?

They pop right in, however your check engine light will remain for a few hundred miles unless you reset it. You can reset it 2 ways (without the dealer). 1, have someone with a scan tool reset it (Autozone can do this). 2. Disconnect your battery for a few minutes.
If you choose to do the battery disconnect, you will need to reprogram your windows, radio, moonroof and bas/esp. I can post instructions if needed.

Hey cool, thanks alot. Yeah, I already did the reset by disconnecting the battery after I cleaned it. I noticed my windows didn't work exactly right (but stumbled across how to program them) and had to call to get the radio code. What do I have to do to program the moonroof and bas/esp, I haven't tried it yet?
$300 for the part is much better than the dealer's $530 price when I can just pop it in myself, thanks!

BAS/ESP - hold the brake pedal and turn the steering wheel all the way right, then left, then back to center.
Moonroof - Close the moon roof. Press and hold it in the up position for 5 seconds. Auto open should now work.

Where did you pick your sensor at? Mine is out as well for a while now. Also any instructions MACH on how to change it out? Your wisdom would save a few of us big time.
Thanks....

Okay did a search and found a place called www.autopartsauthority.com. They had the sensor with no shipping costs for $290 and in stock...yeah that's what I am talking about.

yeah, I got mine from mercedeshop .com or something like that. It's $299. It's real easy to take of and put on, just remember the way it is situated when you take it off, either that or look up the german word duschflub (or whatever it says on there)
Thanks for your help mach, the resetting stuff worked.

lz_clk: Great, so everything is good now?
benzinoben: if you follow your airbox tube towards the motor, about halfway you will find a ~4-5" tube with a wire attached to it. That wire is attached to your MAF sensor, and must be removed by pulling on the clip which secures it. Once that is removed, pull the metal tab on the top back, and likewise for the metal tab underneath (you will have to feel around for this one). Use a screw driver to loosen the clamp and then remove the MAF Sensor. Follow these instructions in reverse to replace the MAF.
Keep up the compliments everyone
My ego is loving it!

Mach430, I'm new to the board and your posts are the most informtative I've seen! Is there any chance we can sticky a FAQ thread with questions like this and other helpful input?

Goodnews, I got my air mass sensor yesterday and thanks to Mach430, it was a breeze to install. It took me almost 15minutes to change. It took another 5 minutes to hook up my OBDII reader and erase the error log. Now I dont feel the wierd stuttering of the motor when on idle. It can barely be felt and you can see the RPM needle bounce just slightly, but now, no bounce...except for my head while I am jamming to my beats!!!!
Definitely a DIY. You dont have to be a genious, just be patient and the OBDII tool helped a crap load to read clear my error form the CPU.

Not sure, but since it is so heavily dependant on a computer to run, I would say it might just because once the error has been detected, the air to fuel mixture might be changed to compensate for the what it thought it was reading. But dont take my word for it, just trying to make sense...
Go buy an OBDII reader from EBAY, I have the ACTRON and it works perfectly fine
. Infact I saved almost $400 bucks by doint it myself, which more then paid for a $150 sensor and $99 reader, with cash left over for my never ending tire savings....

For what it is worth, I just replaced the AMM (MAF) and the car ran fine, even before I reset the error code.
I only paid $239.89 from importec.com and received it in three days.

Well, this is interesting, The CEL came on indicating the MAF was bad. So I cleaned it (the metal wires) with a q-tip swab that was dipped in Carb Cleaner and then Isopuryc Alcohol and then replaced the MAF.
The CEL continued to stay ON after that, so I went to Autozone and had them reset it with theri OBDii scanner to turn it OFF.
The light came back on again after 10 miles of driving, however after driving for 50 miles, it finally went off again. It hasn't come back on since.
What the heck is going on? I just ordered a new MAF too!
