Question Comand

Just had the comand unit replaced in my car due to the cd not ejecting properly. The program on the new unit seems different?
When you select a city or street on the old unit it would only permit the selection of letters of possible names in that area. The new cd highlights all letters. What gives???

Hey Bob, I just had my Command replaced for the same reason being the CD was not ejecting properly. The Navi works the same as the original but now my clock is all messed up and now my multi function steering wheel wont let me set the time. What gives? BTW, has anyone had any problems with their A/C not working and the Economy button doesnt shut off?:o

If you have a COMAND, you can only set the clock from within the COMAND,

it feeds to the dash.

COMAND and Time

Nick is right. I seem to remember reading that the time will automatically be set via satellite. This explains why the time is incorrect the morning of daylight savings time until you put your key in the ignition and start the car. There is, however, a way to manually override and set the time yourself within the COMAND menus.

All of them, as much as I can...
Step by Step...

NavI
Press SVC button
Select System Settings
Select Settings
Select Date/Time.

besides from the problem "cd not ejecting properly" which I also have, my command is having trouble playing music cds. Sometimes the command will display no cd when the cd is in there. When playing the command can't not read the last few tracks properly, the music becomes choppy, noise in the background, tape like quality.

Anyone also has the same problem???

Are you playing Burned CD's? If not then you need to replace the whole Comand Unit. Thats what I did. Thank Goodness for warranties

Theres a s/w update that needs doing. US dealers have a CD and should know this. EU dealers have a CD thats officially for voice recognition problems, but gives you all those features ..

Unhappy COMAND is weak!

I would have to say that no matter how much i love my comand system, i also hate it just as much. Sometimes that thing just totally screws me over by telling me to go left when i can't possibily go left...to turn right when there is left one way road, to purposely make me take the long route, and sometimes even take forever to direct me to the next exit!!!! Jeez, it's helped me find my way just as many times as it has screwed me over. You think Mercedes Benz could put a better NAV system on there cars. Even the new 2003 SL continues to use the CD-based Nav system, what a rip.

My advice, don't get COMAND system if your getting a 2002 benz...instead go for a third party ALPINE Nav System...very intuitive and non-obtrusive unit.

mmmm, my comand does a pretty good job. although I did have to "fine tune" the setup by inputting an incremental tire size. Maybe it has something to do with the western database. The Northeast (7) is pretty good. Intuitiveness and size is another issue. I agree it's pretty cumbersome. However, I think the Alpine systems use the same CDs put out by NavTech, so it will turn you up the same one way street...

COMAND

COMAND is by no means perfect. You are correct, there are times when it is inaccurate. However, when you are in unfamiliar rural area, at night, and lost, it is a lifesaver.

My COMAND has been surprisingly accurate.

The only times I've had trouble is with road construction. You just can't turn left when there is no road there anymore! (Well, maybe in our ML ... )

And of course the database is a year or two old now - Dallas changes a lot in a couple of years!

For Techbike...inputing Incremental tire size?

How do i do that? Will that increase the accuracy of my Comand system?

Go to calibration...

Then you have to input the correct size of your front tires.
When I switched to 19s and input the mfg. stated size, the system would show me slightly short of intersections and get progressively worse as I went farther. It was basically a trial & error kinda thing. Not very scientific but I gave it a shot. I put in a slightly smaller sidewall height.(Instead of 235/35/19, I put in 235/33/19) until the map was more accurate, and the countdown bar was exact to the turn point. I'm not sure what I have on there now but the accuracy is better (like with the stock tires)

It could be the unit is smart enough that it figures out discrepancies after a while, much like the "driver-adaptive" ECU in the new cars.

After installed the comand, I was able to set the clock in the IC from the steering wheel. Since the dealership activated the comand to be display in the IC, I can only set the clock from the comand and it will display the correct time in the IC (the same time as in the comand).

You can't blame the hardware for software flaws...my Clarion nav system is even capable to have me make a rightturn on a highway flyover onto a highway that is 3 levels lower...eventhough that sucks, it is a glitch in the software and not due to the hardware...

greetingz,

This is the correct (i.e factory supplied) behaviour. COMAND learns its time from the GPS and uses the settings it has to do timezone adjustment, then tells the car's clock what the real time is. No more clock setting needed as summer time comes and goes !
