Clinching roof cover clk320
Clinching roof cover clk320
Hi All,
I could really use your help and please bear with me on the story below. Just trying to give as much as possible information about my problem.
In a nutshell my roof will go down perfectly but won’t go back up. What is the sequence of going down.
so far so good. When I want to fold the roof back and I perform a self test with the iginition the button lights red and turns off indicating the test is successful. If I push the button- instead of releasing the top cover and lifting it seems to clinch down on the top cover and therefor not doing anything. Manually completing the cycle and battery disconnect makes no change.
I have an Autel Mk808bt with the 38pin autel adapter and can witness the live data.
with the top down the following sensors status can be seen.
roof down- by the 2sided switch on the side of the roof frame.
roof folded - by the switch on the ram. If I manually operate I get 3 status. Roof up, intermediate and roof folded.
cover closed + cover locked from the cover lock.
roof bow unlocked from the bow lock
headrest down from the roll over.
it seems that all conditions are met on the switches nevertheless when I operate it seems to be clinching down the cover.
I have removed all 7 valve actuators and have cleaned them check the seals and replace what I thought was needed. I measures resistance to ground for every connection to the ECU and I have also switched this ECU. Problem persists.
I have measures all values from switch to ECU pinout and also the autel live data confirm that the status of the switches are read.
I can figure out for the life of me why the cover is clinching. My best guess is that the rollbar is actually pushing down and this pressure makes the cover move slightly. For sure the sensors on the rollbar are working as I can see the status change in the autel live data.
i see options of ram sensor and sometimes rollover bar being faulty but at this point i was hoping if any of you had similar problems or would be able to give me some guidance.
cheers
Richard

In a nutshell my roof will go down perfectly but won’t go back up. What is the sequence of going down.
- Ignition on and convertible top button light up for two seconds and turns off indicating self test was successful.
- I manually unlatch the roof and the windows go down indicating the top switch is ok. And the button light up.
- i pull the button and the rear bow unlatches, moves up and the top cover unlatches and moves up.
- roof folds back and the top cover closes. A chime will follow.
- the windows will go back up and headrest if it was up.

This sounds like a similar issue I had with my 02 CLK430 Cab. The issue was failed seals inside the case cover and rear bow-lock cylinders. This allows the majority of pressurized fluid to just bypass instead of operating.
I bought a seal kit and replaced them or you can buy replacements from top hydraulics. https://tophydraulics.com/w208-clk/1...80_240_deposit

Ok sounds very plausible as the clinching cover seems to be side effect of the pressure not going right somewhere else.
when I open my roof the cover goes up and down but when I manually open it I need a stick to hold it up. Is that normal?
could you pinpoint the exact cilinder you changed to me please as a first step to look at?
many thanks

I replaced the seals in these two cylinders. https://tophydraulics.com/w208-clk/1...80_240_deposit
