SOLVED: CLK430 No-Start Issue with Battery/Alternator Warning
Just wanted to share a recent issue I solved with my 2000 CLK430 (140k miles) that might help others experiencing similar symptoms.
**The Problem:**
- Car suddenly wouldn't start after parking for about 40 minutes
- All electrical components worked fine (radio, windows, convertible top operation)
- Battery/Alternator warning displayed on dash
- No cranking whatsoever when turning key to start position
- Jump starting the car did NOT resolve the issue
- Car was driving perfectly fine just before parking
**Failed Solutions:**
- Jump starting with cables connected to another vehicle for 10+ minutes
- Checking fuses
- Multiple attempts to start in different conditions
**The Actual Solution:**
I discovered the ground wire connecting the alternator to the frame had completely deteriorated and broken off. This single disconnected ground was preventing the starter from engaging despite having power to all other systems.
**The Fix:**
Purchased a replacement ground wire from AutoZone and installed it - car started immediately after the repair!
**Why This Happened:**
The missing ground connection created an open circuit that:
1. Triggered the battery/alternator warning light
2. Allowed small current flow for accessories but not enough for the starter
3. Made the jump start ineffective since the ground path was still broken
If you're experiencing no-crank symptoms with working electrical accessories and a battery/alternator warning, check all your ground connections carefully, especially around the alternator and engine. Sometimes the most basic connections are the culprit rather than complex electronic issues.
Hope this helps someone avoid unnecessary parts replacements and diagnostic headaches!
