I took my pristine 2001 CLK430 in to a new indy mechanic because of a minuscule oil leak. He looked at it for a second or two and said that the oil level sensor needed replacing. Fine. $700.00. Didn't fix the leak. After my visit, the car started overheating when stopped in traffic or at very long lights on hot days. I took it to my trusted mechanic (he's in Palm Springs so I don't visit him often) and he discovered that the sonofabi*tch A**hole mechanic that screwed up the oil leak also removed the fuse for the auxiliary cooling fans! What was he going to do if I brought it back to him? Shake his fat ugly head and say, 'Yeah, you need a water pump and a radiator, that'll be $4500.' And What? I'm a big dope who doesn't know any better? This really chafes my butt. I want to call the guy out, but he'll just deny it. Beware folks. The world is FULL of bad actors. 45K documented miles.
Quit taking your car to the mechanics. It’s not worth it anymore, like it was back in 2005 when they could do it faster and better than on your own. Watch the you tube video, buy the sensor for $70, and replace it in two hours.
It’s almost always faster, easier, and better quality to do it yourself and that not likely going to change for the next few years.

I agree! If I screw up, I can kick myself and learn from the mistake. When a paid mechanic screws things up, you either eat it or spend more time and money trying to get satisfaction.
So did you also need an oil sensor? There is an error code specifically for that! The M113 engine likes to weep oil at the valve covers, some good YT on how to diy the work. I have to agree with others, if you’re handy and have place to work start buying tools. This car has sentimental value for me but not worth the $300hr labor charges dealers and indie ask for, jm$.02
