Cost of brake pads + rotors + install
hey guys,
I just got my new tires installed today, and the mechanic tells me my front pads need to be replaced and it would be a good idea to replace the rotors as well.
Questions to you guys
1. What is the typically cost of getting front brakes pads/rotors plus installation?
2. Should I buy the parts myself and get the work done? Would that be cheaper?
I asked one independent shop and they quoted me $435.00.
Just curious to know if that's too high/average/low..etc..
Please let me know.
Thanks

Yeah, unless they're charging $235 in labor, that's def high. Sounds like something the dealer would do :-P Check out evosport at www.evosport.com too - they have regular ones or cross drilled brembo rotors for about $100 more I think.

got it done today.
I got the brakes + rotors (front) replaced total 400.00 from an benz specialist shop. I called three dealerships in my area and the lowest cost was 650.00..that's sick! Plus i got my foglight fixed for free ![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Could be worse, my wife just had her BMW 5 series brakes/rotors, and it cost a little over 1k. Obviously I didn't know about it until after it was done. I was shocked!
Hopefully my CLK will not be so bad.

yeah I told her to go and get it done since the dealer said they only had a couple of thousand miles left on them when they serviced it last. My mistake was not asking what all was involved and getting a quote from the dealer. They automatically replace the pads AND discs when they do a brake job. They claim that BMW calls for that on all brake jobs because the discs and pads wear out at the same time. I thought that was strange, but they swear it to be true.
It was a hard lesson learned.

Why would the discs and pads go bad at the same time. That's almost too confusing to comprehend.
I paid around 300$ to get new pads all around and my front rotors machined. That was after taxes and labor on my LS400.
Powerslot rotors and some Hawk Street pads should run you 540$ max.
If you get the parts yourself and get it independently installed, it will be cheaper, no doubt.
What I suggest is seeing if you want a big brake kit or not. They usually run around 3000$ give or take a few hundred depending on the size you want.

Ricky:
BMW won't turn rotors, only relace them for some reason--even with minimal wear.

That would almost be worth the drive to Houston!

99CLK320,
I just paid about $200+shipping for a set of Porterfield RS4 pads. Have you guys priced a set of oem rotors lately? A quality rotor like Brembo is about $75X4+$200=$500. Thats the high end for parts without labor. ATE makes a rotor for around $40. I dont know what you guys are squaking about? How many miles are on the rotors and have the pads been changed before? Check out the specs for rotor thickness and if they are within the oem tolerances why replace the rotors. Mechanics like to replace parts because the can mark them up and bill more flat rate time when, in fact, what they bill for the book rated time for the repair is seldom what time they really spend on the car. that's the name of the game and how they make their living. I had a mechanic charge me $65 for a brake master cylinder for an 82F150 when the Ford dealer sold the same part for $25. Needless to say, when I checked it out, I never went back to that mechanic. I don't mind anybody making money but when you mark up a part over 100% I think that's a bit much. Learn to do your own work. Take your time. Its not hard.

Reasonalbe? Get a second opinion from another shop and you may get another figure. Its reasonable to me but I won't pay it because I will do the work myself cuz its fun.
