MAF went bad again!

Man I'm getting pissed. I bought my 99 CLK 2 years ago with 43k miles, and I now have 75k miles. This is my 2nd MAF for this car! Are these cars that hard on them? I've never had it go out on any other car so what is the cause? Bad software?

I know that this is a common mercedes problem because my wifes old ml320 it went out around 20k miles.

To top it all off my dealer was telling me it takes 2.5 hours to change it out, bwaaaa haaaa :p ($80.00 an hour) Screw that give me the part I'll change it in 5 minutes and unplug the battery to reset it all.

yeah, most of the time, its excessive oils in aftermarket filters that cause the MAFs to fail... although, thats usually the issue for 320s....

Well the funny thing is my dealer said it probably wasn't the K&N....plus I haven't cleaned it in probably 6 months cuz I don't drive that much.

The other even funnier thing.......I go to pick my car up today and it runs fine?? I haven't swapped the MAF out yet? All they did was reset the computer and now it works?

I'm trying to sell this car.......tired of it......asking 22,950 obo!

I'm not sure if this is true or not but I heard that sometime cleaning the MAF sensor with carb cleaner will make it work again. Its worth the few dollars the cleaner costs to give it a shot before you shell out $200+ for a new sensor. Can't believe the dealership charges for 2 hours of labor to change the sensor. Like you said, I'd do it myself.

MAF sensors

If you never change your air filter or you heavily oil your K@N filter your MAF sensor will definatly go bad. Cleaning the MAF could work. I've tried that with a few customers. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it makes it worse. Just don't try it on a perfectly working MAF sensor. And the 2-3 hour install time dealers charge. There is nothing wrong with that. Warranty will normally pay 1.5 hours or 2.5 if you play your cards right. Lets do a breakdown.

1. Finding the car and pulling it in. 10mins
2. Finding a properly working SDS with all the neccesary cables 15mins
3. Running a short test and inspected actual values 10mins
4. Finding out it needs an airmass. 2mins
5. Going to parts department to get the part. 15 mins
6. Installing the air mass. 2mins
7. Erasing the codes. 5mins
8. Reseting the adaptation values 2 mins
9. Road testing to make sure the new adaptation values set 30mins
10. Finding another SDS because someone took yours while you were on that road test. 15 mins
11. Running a short test again and inspected actual values. 10mins.
12. Writing down or typing down your story for the repair order. 10 mins.

So lets see 126 mins total so a squeak over 2 hours. I remember this stuff cause I did about 4 MAF sensors this week. Like i say. Befriend a mercedes mechanic. It really helps in the long run. OR spend about $6000 on a SDS of your own. HEHEHE!
