Speeding ticket in the CLK

First of all, I'd like to wish you all a very happy new year.

Second, I got a speeding ticket on the Jersey turnpike. 79 in a 65. I live in NY. Does anyone know if I get points on my license because it was out of state?

most likely...

processing across state lines can be fuzzy. but going from NY to NJ will probably happen because they are neighboring states with lots of cross traffic. I heard once tho that if you mail the check in for your fine or write it at the courthouse for $1 over that they will cash it and send you a refund check for the extra dollar. However, in some states (apparently) points cannot be put onto a license until all financial activity has been finished. Therefore, hypothetically, if you do not cash the $1 check, they cannot put points on your license. Im not sure it will work, but heck, its worth a shot.

You shouldn't lose points in NJ. I get those all the time and I'm a NY resident.

Look here.....

http://www.njtrafficlawyer.com/faqs.htm

"The Nonresident Violator Compact assures nonresident motorists in member states they'll receive the same treatment as resident motorists. When drivers receive traffic citations in member states, they must fulfill the terms of that citation or face the possibility of license suspension in their home state until they meet those terms. Nonresident drivers have due process protection and cannot be detained out of state. Currently, 44 states and the District of Columbia are members of the compact. Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon and Wisconsin are nonmembers. The compact doesn't apply to parking or standing violations. Highway weight limit violations and violations of Hazmat transportation laws.

The National Driver License Compact exchanges violation information with other states and the District of Columbia. Out-of-state violations become part of your NJ driving record. Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee and Wisconsin are nonmember states."

I realize this website is about NJ tickets mostly, but the facts still may apply to your situation. You may decide that the best option is to go to court ot hire an attorney.

Good luck!

no need to worry. i get speeding tickets all the time in nj and it doesnt affect your ny license nor does it affect your insurance. just make sure you pay the ticket otherwise your license will be suspended in nj and if you get caught they will arrest you. ny is one of the few states that doesnt transfer points/infractions from other states

Speeding FYI in NJ

FYI.... In NJ you can plead to an "Unsafe Driving" charge, which carries a state surcharge of $250 (plus local court costs).....BUT.....NO POINTS.

I was recently snagged doing 70 in a 50 zone.....went to court...and after talking to the Prosecutor, she informed me of this option. Expensive fine, but nothing compared to 3 years of insurance co. surcharges.

If it's true that NY does not recognize points from NJ follow B'Benz's advise, but if they do....the unsafe driving charge is another option.

Good Luck

very very good. I was real lucky too. The cop got me at a low of 79 and a high of 84 but wrote me down for the 79 even though after I saw he got me i tried to speed up and change highways.

I got a reckless driving ticket in South Carolina for going 93 in a 60 near the beginning of last year... a few months later got a letter from the Ohio BMV saying that the violation was on my record but I didn't receive any points for it because it was out of state. Good thing too because it was a 6 point violation!

EFF YOU JACKIE
Certain states have reciprocity agreements, and their DMV's do not communicate. I don't think I have ever heard of someone getting stopped / ticketed out of state and the points transferring. The fines are usually astronomical! Just an FYI..
