Lowering a CLK500

Hi guys,

I'm looking to lower my CLK500 with Brabus springs, but cannot find any information on where I can get a matching set of shocks. I've seen conflicting information with some people saying they'll be fine on the stock shocks and others saying changing only springs will ruin the shocks pretty quickly. I'm more concerned with ride quality than performance.

Can anyone recommend a suspension kit for under $1000 that includes springs/shocks? Searching through the forums, I've seen several mentions of cup kits and coilover suspensions, but have no idea how either work and what their benefits/drawbacks are.

Any info would be great.

I know this doesn't answer your original question, but I have a CLK320 and my car is lowered with Brabus springs while keeping the stock shocks. I just rolled over 26,000 miles and my suspension (had it checked out by my local shop when I changed from winter back to my summer tires) is still tight.

I have been researching this topic for some time now because I also want to lower my CLK 320 with Brabus parts. I am aslo prefer ride over performance which is a big dilema choosing the right size wheels. I'd really like to get 19's but again ride quality is what I am after so who knows, maybe I'll have to sacrifice a little. I emailed Brabus and they sent me a pdf file with all the available options and prices for the CLK. The Brabus sport suspension W 209 for the 320/500/55 includes 4 lowering springs and 4 shock absorbers with Brabus valving, comfortable ride for $1,275 plus $340 installation. I don't know what shock absorbers are or if that's replcacing your existing stock shocks but that's what Brabus will inlcude with their suspension kit. Just thought I'd throw that out to you. Let me know what you decide.

I put Brabus springs on my car when I originally got it:

It barely lowered the car, and I ended up taking them off and getting a set of Bilstein PSS-9 coilovers instead. The coilover setup is much better, although a bit more expensive:

I have the Kleemann suspension & springs. Absolutely love it. Lowered the car about an inch. Under 2k.

Frisco, is the first pic with just the springs? If it is, that's a sufficient drop for my tastes. How was the ride quality with just the springs? Coilovers with that much drop seem like they would have to be harsh, since there is not much travel room for the suspension.

I can't find any Koni or Bilstein parts listed for the w209. Shox.com and whoever else I talk to all say they have nothing to offer for this car. So I've been considering picking up an Eibach Pro-System Kit. From what I've read, the included shocks are made by Sachs and should provide a clean 1.2" drop. There does not seem to be much info about this kit anywhere, but it looks like a decent option. Has anyone tried it?

the Bilstein pss-9 is imported here, Bilstein USA dont have them yet. If you wanan just go with springs, go with the Renntech ones. It gives you a pretty nice drop. A lot of members on the board have it, do a search on it.

I am running a set of H&R Springs $250-$300, and a set of Eibach Shocks $650-$750. The drop is perfet and the ride is great. I would recomend if you do not want to spend over $1,500 for a set of coilovers.

Brabus Lowering Spring are ok, you just have to make sure that if you have a V8 you get the springs that suite a V8. If you have a V6 and get the V8 springs the car will not drop in the front at all.

The CLK55 AMG Springs are actually physically the same height as the Brabus springs, the only difference is the AMG springs are 14.5mm in thickness & the Brabus are 14mm (about the thickness of a coat of paint). That 0.5mm thickness and the fact the Brabus centre 3 coils are spaced about 5mm further apart gives you a drop of around 5-7mm further than the CLK55 springs.

So, if you have CLK500 the Brabus Lowering Spring will do, I have used them on my new CLK55 Amg and I feel its perfect.
