Do It!

I did. Sounds really really really good (& loud); just like an American muscle car.

Joe

Where is it?

Hi, I want to know if I can remove it myself. I have a 350, but I think the exhaust systems are stiil very similar in nature. My 350 is too quiet to my liking. The SLK sounds sweet.

Awesome, did you just put two pipes in its place or did you use an x pipe? Does anyone have any suggestions on this? I am referring to just the cheap universal x pipe like the one magnaflow makes.

It is after the cats and before the muffler almost right under the passenger door. No you can't remove it yourself. You have to have something to weld back in its place. Muffler shop will prob charge around $50.

He's right. You have to replace the resonator with a straight pipe. Any muffler shop will be glad to help you. Some will do it for $30.

Good luck!

Ok just did it, $35 plus tax. Its not dual so just replaced with one pipe. Sound is almost no change that I can notice while driving the car, just slightly louder. I haven't heard it from outside yet.

Believe me, it's at least 20% louder. What kind of muffler do you have?

its the stock muffler on a 2003 500 Sport

By the way, I did a separate post for this but no replies yet. Do you know if you can purchase just the AMG dual exhaust tip and will it fit on my stock muffler?

Well, i have an Eisenmann race muffler installed. The sound is just phenomenal. Sounds like a Mustang Cobra when you step on it. I don't know much about the AMG tips. I hate to give you advice in that department. Also, you might want to look into replacing your stock muffler. You don't have to go with Brabus or Eisenmann and spend $1,000+. There's plenty of choices out there. I know someone with the same car who installed an American-made muffler. Sounds very comparable to mine. I think he paid $300 including installation. If money's not an issue, go with the Eisenmann race muffler. Many guys on this forum have it. They swear by it.

Good luck!

I second that, if you have the money Eisenmann is the way to go. It has a very muscle-car sound, but it still has that destinctive Mercedes-Benz engine noise. It's so sweet. Everbody looks when I hit the gas and almost everybody races with me. I am going to get the resonator cut out when I can find a shop that will do it for under $100. Nobody wants to touch my car for some reason, all these shops think that you can't do anything to a Mercedes. So far I've gotten quotes for 300 and 400 bucks. Really annoying...

I wish I could man. Besides the ridiculous pricing out here, the weather sucks as well. Its way too cold and the CLK is a total waste in the snow. Oh well.

Rocky Balboa should stay on the East Coast. California isn't his cup of tea.

All they do for the install is use a Sawzall to cut out the resonator and then weld on the straight pipe - I paid $30 IIRC and it took about 15 minutes. Over $100 is a total scam.

It's slightly louder (call it 10-20%), but the tone also changes and gives the car more of a rumble.

Mustang Cobra. A bit deeper and nicer. But again, that's with an Eisenmann Race muffler and without a resonator.

Lol...Whether its Rocky's cup of tea or not, I couldn't get my car out of my driveway this morning . I had to have a friend run to the store and buy me a bag of salt so I could get the ice melted from my driveway. I burnt so much rubber trying to get up the driveway that I can still smell it.

And yeah, the Eisenmann race does give it a mustang noise...just wish I could get the drone a little quieter.

My friend just got the resonator cut out of his E55...made a slight difference, a little more throaty and you can hear the "pop." On my car with the eisenmann exhaust, the resonator removal made it sound ridiculous. It is so nice, I get compliments all the time. I've had people on sidewalks jump into bushes when they hear me coming (not exaggerating, its happened a couple of times).

It'll probably sound a bit better on the 500, probably a little more V8 sound to it.

I’m running a SuperSprint exhaust. After I cut the resonator it made a very minor difference. A little deeper, and a little more rumbling. Not much though. Overall, I’m VERY happy with the sound. It’s a bit lower then the Eis. Race exhaust.
