CLK500 vs CLK55 AMG Need help deciding

Calling all experts:
I've been considering these models for a while now and was wondering if for the MY2003, should I spring for the extra $ and get the AMG?

Has there been any common problems or things I need to look for when test driving the 2003 55AMG vs. CLK500?

Thanks in advance for your opinion.

Mercedes
Get the one with the least mileage and lonegst warranty left. You're going to need it for one reason another. In my case, the always comes up with some minor electrical problem, and the transmission always develops a leak in some form or another.

What would the price difference be between an '03 55 and an '07 550?

If you're already considering the 07 550, get that one.

Odd question. I recommend NOT getting an '03 E or CLK 500 or AMG. I'd take an '05 CLK500 over an '03 C55. Why would you want to inherit all the bugs?

Agreed and good point.

I'd also take the 07 550 over a CLK55...now the 63 is a totally different matter

Thanks everyone for your insight. The '03 CLK500 I'm looking at is about $35K and the '03 CLK55AMG is $41K both with 20K miles.

I know at the end I might end up getting an 05 since I've read about the "bugs" in the 03 and 04's. It's just a matter of numbers I guess. I just have to find a deal on the younger car.

How's your 04 CLK500 running? Has it had the "bugs" mentioned earlier?

Get the '07 550. You'll love it. If you're going to buy a Mercedes you can't be cheap about it because you're going to see that savings spent towards expensive repairs. So just get the 550.

Aside from the common chronic brake squeal and a noisy AC compressor the car is very good. I addressed the brakes myself see here:
https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...21#post1511521

I have a very early 04 so I hope I don't get the coolant into the trans problem that some 03-early 04 may have. I will say this, the car has no rattles, is very tight and is very fast, I think the Road and Track numers are dead on, at least from the way this car feels. I had on 03 CLK500 too but it did not seem near as fast as this one. My car only has 18,000 miles and still smells and looks brand new (I'm a perfectionist with maintaining cars...hell everything ). My lease is up this May and I'm deciding wheather to keep it or get a new 07 CLK550. I was going to get the new M3 but that now has been pushed back until late 2007. If I turn this car in, someone here should buy it from MB as it is like a new car and has another year of factory warranty not to mention the new style AMG wheels and Michelin Pilots that were a take off from a brand new CLK500.

The late model '04s had most of the updates done, so you may want to consider them Also, there should be some rolling off of initial leases, too.

I think if you feel comfortable posting your pay off when you're ready to get the new car, someone would probably pay it and buy the car.
On the issue of coolant into trans, I asked a mechanic down here who works on both BMW and MB, he said he's seen a couple of cases on out of warranty cars that ran a pretty penny to get fixed(he said almost fixed!?).
I'm starting to look at 05 500's for that reason.
Once again, thanks for the input.
