All show no go (AMG)
Ok, I guess I got your attention. This is what I mean. I love the look of the AMG exterior, but I am perfectly happy with the specs of the CLK-320. What do you think the cost of doing an exterior conversion would be??

Normally a Sport package including body kit+ 17"-18" wheels tires are around
4-5K for other models like the R230 or the W210. If you want to go for a CLK320 and add the AMG package aftermarket your gonna spend around 3K for the bodykit plus a bit for paint and about 2K for 18" AMG's with max performance tires. But im sure the store will cut you a deal if your buying all these mods at once.

Its 52,200 - 43,900 = 8,300 + tax + higher insurance
The only difference (info straight from the brochure)I really see between the 500 and 320 is
500 - V8
500- AMG-design sculpted front air dam with mesh air intakes, side skirts and rear apron
320 - Atlas Grey grille with four chrome ribs and chrome surround
500 - Black grille with four chrome ribs and chrome surround
Both has Chrome exhaust finisher (enlarged on CLK500 and CLK320 with optional Appearance Package)
500 - Blue-tinted glass
320 - Neutral-tinted glass
The wheels and brakes are different...
So for a V8 engine.. approx 10K more???? For more power I would stick to a beamer....

I have to agree with Harish_m.
The costs can get away from you on the 500 -- I have a 98 E320 and the engine is very good, reliable and has plenty of pick-up. Shed the 400 pounds for the CLK and it should be more than suficient.
Don't forget gas_guzzler tax.....another $1000....would be tacked onto the 500 as well.

I was paraphrasing from the August issue of Road & Track.
The article compared the CLK320 with the CLK500 and stated:
For what might be the best spent $6,000 in the business, you can upgrade the CLK320 and move from 218 HP to the CLK500 and move up to the 5 liter, 306 HP V-8, 17" AMG wheels, AMG sport package...and just under 6 seconds from 0-60 mph.
...need I say more??

Expect to see many more CLK500's on the streets than CLK320's.

R & T looked at both MSRPs and reported the difference of $6,000 - not rocket science,
... and if you wish to goldplate the 500, the difference will obviously change.

More importantly, gas guzzler tax, luxury tax, and sales tax add another $1,500.
I am not sure how that is 6,000.

so it's all kewl. even for the 8300 difference (which is mighty big for me) i think the clk500 is a nice deal.
The only thing bothers me is that all the options I want will push the price of the car to freaking 63k or so. Giving me thoughts if I should spend the extra money and get 911.

or R&T had non-final prices when writing the article. in either case, it looks like the difference is more like $8300 and it's up to you to decide if that's worth it.
a 911 starts at $69k... add a couple of options and the price gets pretty high quickly.
