Yesterday by trunk mounted brake light fitting broke for the fourth time. Being a Sunday, there was nothing I could do as the dealerships were closed. Today I head to the nearest one to my office and tell them it has broken yet again and that I want it fixed under warranty.

What do they tell me...

This NEVER happens and only does happen when someone has been trying to break into your vehicle. Are they on drugs, I pulled out the service reports stating this to the contrary and they just dismissed them out of hand.

Well I arranged for it to be fixed and stated I'd just have to call Mercedes HQ as this is a known problem, reported on numerous forums etc... Later that day I got a phone call that they would have to examine my car to see if someone had been trying to break in. My car is very dirty at the back after driving some 1400 miles in 48 hrs and I've not washed it yet. I would see if someone had been trying to break in or not...

So stupid it's unbelievable!

Yeah the 3rd light braking is a known problem. It happened to me once, they changed it under warranty and it hasn't broken since. ABout 60,000 miles ago to.

I replaced mine a couple months ago, and it felt like the bolts holding it in place were WAY too tight from the factory and might have contributed to the cracking problem. I haven't looked that close since I did it and will check for any cracks.

they replaced mine for free... looked kind of different than the original.... search ebay maybe you can find one there if the dealer wont cover it under warranty

I just had mine repaired yesterday. The trunk was making a clinking sound when opening, but I just ignored it. Then one day I went out to the car and noticed the whole brake light assembly was inside the trunk lid. Weird.

My second one has broken too ! A real PITA !

Does anyone know if there is an alternative to the main dealer one ? Maybe a clear one or something !

Hey guys I just replaced my third brake light for the first time the new model i got fits well however the design is different it has more leds and it a clearer red plastic seems must better quality I will try and post pics soon.

From what I recall on the TSB I saw about this after I replaced mine, the problem with these lights was indeed due to an improper torque spec on the mounting bolts from the factory. I hand tightened the bolts on my replacement and there are no signs of cracking or any type of mechanical stress as of Sunday when I washed the car.

Hey guys here we go I have pictures and parts number and cost . The pictures don't do it justice it looks more aggressive with a clearer plastic and more leds the new one is installed in the car in the picture and the old one is sitting on top. The old part number for the original piece was A 209 820 01 56 the new piece part number is A 209 820 09 56. I obtained the part from oempartsdirect for $100 shipped. I received the part in 3 days so they have fast shipping.

Isn't that a little expensive for that part ? I had to replace one of the mirror LED strips and it was 1/4 of that price !
