You are correct, they are 2.5" The 500s and the 320/350s are the same. It's the 55s that are 3" if I remember correctly. That's why mufflers are interchangeable between the v6s and the 500s.

you sir are a miracle, i wish i would have asked you 3 weeks ago, i literally spent 3 weeks asking around and trying to measure myself (it's hard without a lift and stuff) and then using the circumference to calculate the diameter etc etc... lol thanks for your help

oh just wondering would u say it's bad to get a muffler with a 2.25 inlet? so it would be a bout .25 inches smaller than the piping going into it?

Well, you can, and it is possible. They will most likely weld it onto a cone and fit it in that way. Performance wise, it's not going to help as you want the gases to flow out unrestricted. I don't think it will be detrimental to performance, but you may lose a little possibly.
What kind of muffler are you putting on? There are a number of mufflers that is made for your applicaiton. Prices I've seen ranged from a $300 remus upwards to $1500 for the eisenmann race.
