i think alot of people have switched to the new chrome key. i think i saw a 2000 s430 do it once too, so i'm almost 100% sure it will work for your car. do a search for "chrome key" and i'm sure you'll find the answer you're looking for.

i agree, i bough my clk 500 2003 4-5 months ago and the key had a slight crack, so got dealer to knock of £200 and i went to merc for new key it cost £150 so i purchased it and 3 days later had my new chrome one what a improvement.
p.s with new fob you will need new laser cut bit, it costs £20 and may take time as it comes from Germany.

I have an '04 and I just got a new key - and it is the new style (chrome) so I'm sure your '06 would work with a new key. Waaaay nicer than the original '04 key!
