CLK550. It might be due to the old days of the numbers going before the letters like the 600 SEL

Exactly! back in the day (late 80's) the badest of all was the 560 SEC. Also the E class began in 87' (which my father bought) and it was referred to as a 300E. Then he bought a 90' 300 SEL. Always it was the number first. I saw an old friend that I havent seen since high school in 88', he asked about my rides, so I told him I had a 550 CLK, I guess that is old skool! LOL

That's another thing, in the NYC area, everybody refers to the car as a Benz, not a Merc, is that what they say in England and other parts of the states?

Merc is incorrect in the states, as it refers to a Mercury. I hate it when people do that. But I have heard Merc used in Europe.

How is it referred to in Chigago?

Have you ever been to SpaccaNapoli in Chigago? http://spaccanapolipizzeria.com/
My friend who is a highly acclaimed pizza critic, said he was told it was worth trying, but hasn't hit it yet. I am a Pizza fanatic also, but the question is, do you know pizza?? You should have a decent idea of food, given Chigago is a pretty good food town compared to NYC, which is the food capital of the world!!! lol

+1

I've only heard it referred to as a Benz on the East Coast. But my coworkers from Europe always say Merc.

Honestly, I've never heard of it, but I will try to stop by. I love pizza, but it has to be Chicago style. Lou Malnati's is my favorite, followed by Uno's (the one downtown, the other ones for some reason aren't as good). I'll post a write up as soon as I try SpaccaNapoli.

ok, now your onto something. My bro-in-law was born & raised on the South side and moved to NYC about 20yrs ago. He is also a pizza fanatic and has mentioned Lou Malnati's before and liked it. Also I agree the original UNO's are good and nothing like the chain. Are you Italian? Why does it have to be Chicago style?? Have you had NY pizza, it's the best and most authentic.

Just say CLK, that explains everything. when people ask what kind of car I drive , I just say an E class, or an M class. I dont go saying I have a E55 or ML63. This way, when they see your car, theyll be like ohhhh, its a 550, nice

No I'm not Italian. I like the Chicago style because I like a ton of cheese, chunky tomato sauce, and a ton of meat and vegetables on my pizza. The NY pizza's too stingy with the toppings. But don't get me wrong, I haven't met a meal I didn't like.

As for the reference to the car, I only say that I drive a CLK if someone asks. It's just simpler.

Following your line of reasoning, you should say 550 CLK then....

The OP was asking why he himself says 550 CLK. I told him it might be because on models 20 years ago the numbers preceeded the letters. I was giving him a possible explanation for his behavior, not a suggestion as to how it should be said. Something lost in translation?
