Problem With 1999 CLK320, It Thinks It's Running Out Of Gas When It's Not...

Im having a problem with my 1999 CLK320. Sometimes it will just stop out of nowhere even if my gas gauge sais half full or full. But whenever I put a gallon or 2 in, it starts right up. So at first I thought my gas gauge was broken. Until today it stopped on me, but I just put 10 gallons in it yesterday and I know for a fact I haven't driven more then 2 gallons worth of gas from then until now. But I filled my gas can up and went back to my car, put the gas in my car and it started right up again. Any ideas what could be the problem??

Lots of reasons... maybe fuel filter is plugged up or fuel pump is going bad. If you do not hear the fuel pump motor noise, the relay is bad.

etc etc etc .. hard to diagnosis over cyberspace!

Good Luck

As above, it is likely to be a fuel pump issue. In the meantime, you could try just opening the gas cap and then closing it without adding gas and that may do the trick temporarily.

It's common for the CPS (crankshaft position sensor) to have gone bad. They're between $120 and $60, depending on where you buy them. Someone who knows what they're doing can change one in 20 minutes.

Could be nothing to do with the gas!!! Just a coincidence.

Could be just turning off the engine and let it cool for a few minutes, it will start right back up; which means an intermittent electrical problem... so Marcus theory of the bad CPS is a good one.

On the other hand, when did you last change the fuel filter?

What is the mileage on the car?

When the engine fails again, can you listen and hear (under car, near right rear wheel) the fuel pump working? If not, you should swap the fuel pump relay; and if you still can't hear it, then it's a bad fuel pump.

Worst case when it fails again, call MBZ Roadside Assistance and let the Knight in Shining Armor diagnose the problem for you on the spot !!!
