You dont have to take the car to the dealer. They only need your VIN#. I got my third one (chrome one) for $200 at the dealer without bringing the car to the dealer.

They should also ask for 'proof of ownership'. Otherwise it could be someone else trying to steal your car.
When I bought my 2 y/o car, I was only offered one key. The original owner had gone overseas taking one key with him. So my MB dealership sold me a new spare, and at the same time cancelled the codes for the missing one, in case it ever surfaced again. No charge for that service. I just paid for the new key.
You can only change the codes for the keys about 6 times. After that all the locks will have to be changed...

I paid $130 for my spare key through a member here on the forum. I think it was Mister Brenton. It was about a year ago so I don't know if he still has access to parts. All I did was give him my VIN.

when i upgraded my key (MB toorak in Victoria, Australia) it was about $450 just for a new key (pre-programmed with inside key also cut)
people in the USA underestimate how much cars cost here down under.
i would not be surprised that they charged you an extra $250 just to re-program it sounds like the MB kind of thing to do!
