It closes roof and windows, as long as your a/c is on, if you press and hold recirc button. Great when you want quiet for phone call or if had roof/windows open to cool cabin first but now you want a/c. I use it when I'm on and off highways: fresh air on slow roads, quiet w/ a/c at high speed (pressing and holding recirc OFF restores roof/windows to where they were when you pressed/held recirc ON. In other words, closing all is automatic, opening all is not).
