iphone/ipod dyno app

I just purchased the Dynolicious app for my iTouch for 13$ and did of 0-60 mph runs. I came up with with an average of 5.8 seconds! The 0-60 for CLk 350 stock online is about 6.4 seconds (I have K&N Filters; didn't know that K&N filters really improve the acceleration that much). But anyways I'm still skeptical about the accuracy of this app so I'm planning to go to drag strip to get an official time soon. But wow 5.8 seconds is pretty crazy for my CLK. No wonder I beat/level my friend's G35 AT '05 coupe.

Anyone else purchased this app and used it and was satisfied with the accuracy of this app? Does anyone want to try it? ?

You have to make sure that the iPhone/iPod is still and not moving around when you accelerate because it will throw off your reading. If you secure the iPhone well enough you should get very accurate reading from the Dynolicious app. Check out this video and I have heard of other people with similar experiences.

I got bored one night and used dynolicious on my iPad. It seems like I get a more accurate reading. 5.8 is too ridicules. On my iPad i got 6.17 seconds.

How does the app get all the information from the car?

I've always been curious how those apps could be accurate?

They use the device's built-in accelerometer to measure G forces (acceleration), but how does the app know when the car has reached 60mph? Yup. It uses the device's built-in GPS receiver. Now, here is my problem with these apps. Commercial GPS receivers update once per second. What happens if you hit 60mph say, 2/10ths of a second into the current second? The GPS hardware won't update the software for another 8/10ths of a second. Right? No, I'm not asking.

So, if your car does say, 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, will the application display 0-60mph in 5 seconds? Or, will it round down to the nearest second to make the user feel better about his/her car?

It's not done by gps. It is purely done by accelerometer. If u go back to physics vf=vi + at, depending on how much you accelerate and the time elapsed. You find out your speed. Since the iPod,iPhone,iPad have a good accelerometer, the app utilizes it to get an accurate acceleration.

I never made it to college. I ended up going overseas to deal with enemies, so physics... not my number 1 thing.

But I am aware of time vs. acceleration. Does the dynolicious app take into account wheelspin? If I'm driving a torque monster will it know to properly calculate torque/HP?

I'll get a... "free" copy of it and test it out on a torque monster that will smoke them in 1st and 2nd and chirp third. If it comes close to 704 Ft lbs then I'll retract the statements in my prior post.

Im in costa mesa and would be down to test the app to compare. Couldnt you have some one watch the gauge on the phone compared to your actual speedometer

To my knowledge, dynolicious does not calculate torque because it cannot get a read on your rpm (horsepower = torque x rpm /5252). It obtains acceleration from the accelerometer, which then uses it with the weight you input for your car and calculates horsepower. (power=force x speed = mass x acceleration x speed) The app has a default .1 g (acceleration) trigger. So if you wheel spin you might trigger the timer. You can always change the trigger to a higher setting if you wheel spin a lot.

I didn't say it should be able to do that. I realize it can't calculate torque. And that's what I'm getting at: How accurate is a device if it can't take into account wheelspin caused by torque? Yes, I understand, you can set higher triggers. But how do you come to the BEST trigger number(s)? Once you're into wheel spin, the results are skewed. Once the device is triggered by wheelspin, it's counting up seconds. On the flip side, if you set the trigger too high, it may not realize you're accelerating till the 1-2 shift.

Bottom line is this: You like the app, it makes you feel good about your numbers, that's cool. It's a lot cheaper than the alternative(s). Personally, I'll pay more and stick to those silly things called chassis dynos for those un-important things like AFR's when modding the car and those abandoned airport runways called 1/4 mile tracks to see what the real world results of those mods are.

I'm just as iffy about the app as you are. I was just stating what the app advertised. I'm going to a drag strip to check the numbers soon.

So this is why people are too lazy to search a topic. It's easier to have someone take the time to look up the answer, or to type the answer.

Thanks, man.
