Rain sensor wipers on CLK-500 suck

The rain sensor wipers on my CLK-500 must be the worst I have ever had on any car. When it is raining ever so slightly the wipers move constantly. It blows my mind that a $64,000 car does not have a wiper system that works properly.

I do not understand it my 2001 CLK 430 and my 2001 BMW 330Ci worked just fine. Mine have a mind of their own.

Completely agree. Even now that my dealer finally got my wiper blades to clean the glass well and stop chattering across the glass, the rain sensor still does not work well.

I would much rather have a variable delay that can be set by the driver (like GM cars have) than this automatic rain sensor.

The thing I hate most about this rain sensor is that sometimes it gets confused and thinks the windshield is wetter than it really is. Then it puts the wipers into super-fast speed. I HATE that. The delay wiper setting should never go into the top speed mode. If I want the wipers on the fastest speed, I will set them to that speed myself.

I find now that I rarely use the rain sensing mode. If it's raining lightly, I usually just push the button manually to give it one wipe at a time.

Agree ! the wipers work stupid, while my C32AMG is doing wisely.

I also have to turn the wipers on and off to swipe wipers at slower pace.

Possible fix for rain sensor wipers for W-209

I called the dealer about the poor operation of the rain sensor. I made an appointment for Monday. He just received a bulletin from MB for a possible fix. I will keep you all informed. Wish me luck.

Good Luck ! I hope there is some type of fix. I have a feeling that the bulletin may just be the adjustment of the wiper blades though. After they got my wiper blades to wipe better, the rain sensor performance did improve but it's still much too quirky for my liking.

If they could just change the programming so that the sensor setting would NEVER put the wipers into full speed mode, I would be happy.

I do not think it is an adjustment of the blades. He started to mention them to me without going into detail but I don't think it is any adjustment of blades.

The wiper and rain sensor issue is wierd. I'm one of the unlucky/lucky owners that initially had wipers the scattered across the wind shield, noisy, skipping areas and made the wipers changed from fast-slow-fast.

Got the wipers changed by MB, silent, cleared the whole windscreen, and at the same time cured the rain sensor issue and made it work perfectly.

Killed two birds with one stone (or two flies with one smack as we say in Sweden).

Cheers,

I had similar problems, once they fixed the wipres to be whisper quiet, the rain sensor problem went away. They are now Fab.

Yes - My rain sensor definitely started working better after the skipping wiper problem was fixed. However, once I started using them a little more, I found that there are still a number of rain conditions that will confuse the rain sensor. The most irritating of which, is when they go into high speed mode.

When you select the intermittent wiper position, the wipers should NEVER go into high speed mode.
