I put amber LEDs in the front headlight turn signals. They are just as visible to other drivers as the filament bulbs (if not even more so), but they don't "project" as much light. Sitting behind a car at night with the turn signal on, I can just barely tell that they are flashing.
One of the caveats of using LEDs are that you have to buy the "error-free" bulbs, which means they have built-in resistors to fool the SAM into seeing them as full electrical load. This also means that if the LEDs fail, you will get no error messages.

Here are some horrible pics. Sorry did not have any one to take the pictures.
I had to take them through my side mirrors. The first one is in park and the 2nd one is backing up.

no error code resistor free led tail bulbs?
I have bought a couple pairs of allegedly canbus ready error free bulbs (not the cheap crap) for the tails and they worked but threw error codes
I have yet to find a vendor who will guarantee that their bulbs will not do the same.
One seller told me there is something about the CLK's resistance level that is problematic.
So if somebody has some that are truly plug and play I would like to know the source.
