Catalytic Converter.. quick questions..

Hey guys,

So I hear this little noise when pressing the gas and when in idle. It sounds like like little stones or something rumbling around and it seems like it would be the catalytic converter. I just brought it to the local shop that I always use on my way to work this morning and he seems to believe it is the catalytic. He says they tend to breakdown over time and little deposits form that sound like rocks or pebbles rumbling around. He said he has seen this happen on cars with 40k miles and 150k miles. I have just over 100k. I was wondering where you guys think I could get a new converter from (because I know I can get it online for cheaper than he can get it for)? But I was also wondering if I could maybe get something that could not necessarily better in performance, but maybe something that can give me some deeper sound. If anyone knows of anything, even if it is the stock one, please let me know. Thanks a lot.

The guy at the shop called me and said it is one of the rear converters. He siad he cant tell which one because when he bangs on either one, he said he can hear it. He said they are $750 each installed. I do not know what to do. If he takes off one and finds out that its not it, he will have to take off the other and then I will have to get 2 new ones. Need Help!

it can be engine mount or transmission mount.. when you press the gas with the rpm increase the rumbling increases? ı had that trouble and fixed with changing the transmission mount and engine mount.

lol @ $750 they must think you are 16 years old and dont know $h*t. Anyway, take those cats out and replace with straigh pipe....you prolly gain like 1 hp and u will love the sounds. Want more louder, take out the cats and the resonator but leave your stock muffler there. Search for my thread "Brandnew Pipes" .

Edit: was it a primary cat or second cat ?

Thanks for the response. But I still need the car to pass inspection. I found all types of universal magnaflow catalytic converters on a website. I entered my year , make, and model and it came up with like 20-30 different universal ones. The guy at the shop said it is one of the rear ones. Are both of the rear ones the same?

I found good converters for the rear from random technology. I saw a few posts about them on the forums and people said that they are great. I called them and they said they have but they need to know the size of the pipe (diameter) so that it can be welded on. Does anyone know the size of the stock w209 clk 500 stock exhaust pipe diameter? Thanks

I had the same problem but due to the fact that I have less than 80k miles, they are being covered by the government imposed warranty. I am just waiting for the nearest dealership to get the pipes in. Sorry, I do not know the pipe size.
