Side Project (more goodies!)

Picked them up today, going to mess around with them next weekend;

I know these have been put on quite a few cars already, but I think they have just been the small to these conversions, I don't know if anyone has done a +/- shift button (up and down shifts on both sides) to these before. I'll have to do some reading, I'm hauling out a few of my multi-meters for this project as well - I'd like to be able to do it without transfering the electronics if possible.

Oh, and my f'in starter crapped out today

Good luck with the project. My car has the +/- buttons and I'd love to get rid of them for that.

Can't wait to see how this turns out. Make sure to document everything (I know you will).

I spoke to a guy that did the conversion but it was a very drawn out affair which ended up with him actually having to mount a slave 9 volt battery!!! I totally respect him for getting it to work, he was a trailblazer no doubt, but I am going to try to simplify things here, hope my way way way past 6 years or electrical and instrumentation come back to me and pay off

These AMG paddles are really fantastic to the touch, heavy al cast and nice form, sure hope I can get them to work!

Oh, and got the car started too, the negative lead was rotted to $h!t, that will be getting replaced tomorrow too.

I got the part number off another thread, the parts guy at MB said they were from an E63

They probably use them on a few different models.

Lol, you got it! The only reason I bought this car and not a new E550 coupe was to have my hobby back - modifying cars. I'm 37 now and hardly have anytime at home anymore so I'm really going to make the most of this CLK project. I'm 100% positive that some of the mods I try aren't going to work - no worries though, the thrill is in the chase right?

Anyways, this is one mod I really want to get working, these paddle shifters are a fantastic upgrade over the stock buttons on the 500 & small plastic paddles on the 550 & 55's.

Just so I understand; I have a 2004 500 and it does not have the small buttons that came on the 55. In later years did they put those shift buttons on all 500s?
Is the addition of the shifter paddles something that can be done for the 2004 model year that did not come with the shift buttons?

I thought they were standard on all 500's and V6 cars with the sport trim but I guss I was wrong - I've spoken to a few guys now that don't have them. If you don't already have steering wheel mounted shift buttons this is not going to be an easy retrofit for you. I'm not 100% sure on the dynamics but you'd have to have the shift button/steering wheel wire harness installed and probable software upgrades to make something like this work. If I didn't already have the buttons, I would not be trying this, the tiptronic or whatever MB calls it would (and does in my C class) be just fine.

Ah, good to know. Klihn also mentioned in another thread that they do not come on the cars with the wood interior (steering wheel) option either.

I looked into going the retrofit route on my car. When I bought it I wanted 2 things-Xenon's and the shift paddles. I have both now. The paddles were easier on mine as I had the buttons so it was just a replacement and some grinding to make the sizes fit between button and paddle. Just as I was about to cut I found a wheel with the paddles and ended up doing that instead. For the older cars its going to be some work.

Dang, I was hoping to this retrofit would apply to me as well (2004 CLK500). Looks like I have to call my boy Steve@MBenznl and see what what is needed for the '03-'04.

My '07 550 does not have paddles even though the info from the dealer based on the VIN said it should have them. But it does have the wood wheel. I had the dealer check to see if the car had the required wiring and just needed a different wheel, but he said no.

I'll try to find the time to get playing around with them this weekend & I'll start a dedicated thread for the project.

Hope they work for you, because thats the most fun you can have with the tranny without going with manual.

Ya, the shift buttons are pretty lame, the paddles are way more PS3 Grand Turismo
