HID fogs with ballast vs HID bulb only

hi all..

I wanted to change my fog lights...not sure if installing the new eclass day time running light mod gonna happen anymore (its really hard to find to find replaceable mesh - Mina auto gallery has been not great with followup if you guys remember my thread a while back)

anyway...

do you think I can get away with just replacing the fog bulb with an H11 6000K bulb only without ballast? I didnt want my fogs to overpower my 8000K D2S bulbs in the OEM bixenon housing (they already arent even as close to as bright as my aftermarket 6000K halogens I had before)

anyone know any good H11 bulb manufactuerers? PIAA? RAZO?

I think what you're asking is HID Fogs vs Halogen Fogs.

There's no such thing as an HID bulb without a ballast, you're referring to halogen bulbs that try to mimic the color output of HIDs.

I personally have 6000k bulbs in my stock xenons and a 6000k HID kit in my fogs, and I love it. The fogs match the headlights and makes the car look extremely sharp

I stand corrected. That's what I meant! Didnt explain myself well

Do your hid with ballast fog over power your low beams?

What brand ? How much and where? Thanks!!

I got my HID fog kit from HIDExtra, a sponsor here on the forums.

At night, the fogs do "seem" brighter than the low-beams, but this has more to do with the glare from the fogs because the low-beams are a projector housing and the fogs are not.

I would not recommend Halogen bulbs that mimic HID's

They use too much voltage and may cause your retainer to melt and maybe fire.

I would suggest an HID kit 35W for the fogs. Plenty of space down there and you will love the light output.

I am not sure why but i have used a set on my G35 back in the day and it melted my retainer and after trying different brands it happened again. Same thing happened to my friends on a Nissan and Volvo...

most of us did it yah. Pretty straight forward since its plug and play. I would suggest error cancelers as well just to be on the safe side

kev: I read that this website has chips inside the ballast to make them error free.

is this true or did you have to add in additional circuitry?

This is what I've found:

A) When not using the error cancelers, the fogs flicker when you turn the wheel left or right at night, dash errors. This happens because our newer cars have that fog light turning assist feature, and the HID ballast does not respond well to it. This is obviously bad for the ballast and the bulb.

B) When using the error cancelers, the fogs no longer flicker, and they function the way they are supposed to when you turn the wheel left or right at night, dash errors still occur.

Of course, these errors can be avoided if you remember to turn on your fogs manually before u start driving at night = no flickering, no error messages.

I used hidextra. I had a constant issue with my passenger side fog going out. My mechanic ended up bypassing the error canceler and hard wiring the fog.

Me too. Haven't been able to use my fogs in a while. I was one-eyed willie.
