Soft top borked.

Hey all,

I had to manually finish the last step of the top coming down.
The soft cover didn't lock the rear window by sliding forward.
My trip up Hwy 18 in the mountains got cancelled today because of it .

Is there any way for me to reset the soft top computer or sensors as the button no longer responds?

Will this be a trip to the local mechanic?

I searched for solutions, but all of them appear to be issues to getting the top up or down. My issue is the button no longer responds.

Thanks all!

On a completely different vehicle I have a lot of electrical computer issues, and I found that if I disconnected the battery, everything reboots. It might be worth a try.

you might want to read this thread before thinking of disconnecting the battery

I read the thread. I'm a little amazed because I have already changed my battery myself, and nothing serious happened other than I had to change things back from the factory defaults like in every car. Needless to say, I didn't know about any special procedure. The windows didn't sink right the first time I opened the doors, which I figured was a computer glitch, as it is, but I just raised them all and so they did the second time. They must have fixed themselves.

Pages 363-365, 144, 213 and 217 in my manual.

I guess if he's trying to avoid the extremely reasonable prices of dealer service he might want to try the reboot. Then if it screws up, he has to take it to the dealer anyway.

Or just let it stay busted?

As per my mechanic, I need a new fuse, relay, pump installation for $2900.

On parts.com the fuse and relay cost nothing, but the pump is $1560.00 [$2170 OEM]. Anyone got the WIS docs to swap out the pump?

2nd question after research. How often do people repair the problem components?
Seems a shame to toss an expensive component.

Wow, $1,500 for a little hydraulic pump? That seems obscene. I have never seen a post about repairing them, but that does not mean they don't exist or that it can't be done. I guess it depends on what is wrong with it. I've never seen how one is built on an MB. I've rebuilt several hydrualic pumps on older convertibles. The usual problem is that he pump and fluid reservoir are one unit, separated by an o ring, which eventually went bad and allowed fluid to flood the electric pump. But what happens to these newer MB pumps I do not know. What I do know is that I'm not looking forward to my first top failure at those prices.

I've disconnect my battery half a dozen times and all I have to do is re-set the clock and adjust the window ups, nothing else.

I did... They were too busy to work it while I waited that day. I need to go back next week when I have time to get away from work. They said it shouldn't cost more then $250-$500 to find and fix the broken component. They also mentioned how MB and BMW's are way over engineered. Gave me the LULS.

Does that mean too damn many parts to do a simple job?

I read that back when Ford took over Jaguar and they redesigned the XJ, the Ford engineers built the same car with 40% fewer parts. I bought a 99 XJ8 new and I loved it. Then the ex wife drove it into about two feet of water.

I mean for goodness sake, look at our cup holder.

I can't believe I procrastinated a whole month. I'm getting the top fixed next week.
The hydraulic pump for the top failed. $2400 at the dealer.

Out of curiosity, why did you back out of the DIY repair? I thought for a while that you were going that route.

Also did M-B tell you how the pump failed, or did they give you the old one for a little dis-assembly?

It was a tougher job then I thought. Mercedes dealer was going to charge me less the my normal mechanic. I also got a free rental for 6 days. My friend owns a specialty top place, they had a tough time working with the top. It was harder then we expected and they gave up.

Ouch. Just wondering if you raise and lower your top or if you have any idea why it failed like getting something caught or damaged at some point in the car's life?

The top just stop working one day. The fact I used the top multiple times a day probably didn't help. Even the Mercedes Tech needed more time to fix the issue, but the honored the original time of 4 hours for labor. I took it in the butt on this one but I had a nice severance package from my last job, so I just said screw it and get it done. They had the car for 4 days. I'm giving the failed pump to All Convertible tops in San Diego so they can learn how to rebuild them. The one guy on the web has a 5 week turnaround time.

So, I think all of my reading what can go wrong with these tops jinxed me. I was driving along I-64 in about 25 degree weather this morning and when i crossed an overpass the transition between the bridge and highway was pretty rough and i felt the car shimmy a bit and the roof squeaked loudly. Immediately received a warning that top was unlocked. I pull off next exit, park and figure I would open then close the top. Well the windows start to come down only about quarter of an inch and everthing stops. I then go to close and it gives me a trunk partition warning. Try to open the trunk and it wont open with either the door release, the key fob or manully with key. I assume its because it thinks the roof is in opening operation. Any thoughts of next step? I see on a previous post that disconnecting the battery would possibly reset it? Fortunately its not raining with the window issue but I have some files in my trunk I need to get at. Called the nearest MB dealership and the tell me an advisor will call me back (that was 4 hours ago). I guess i wil try to get there before they close. TIA
