Seatbelts

Does anyone find the seatbelts very uncomfortable?

My new CLK500 is an amazing car, except the seatbelts are terrible. No matter how I adjust my seat and driving position the seatbelt constantly rubs, cuts into my neck and ends up across my throat. I don’t think this would be very safe in an accident. I have never had this problem in a car before. In my opinion the design of the seatbelt is poor because it is mounted too far behind the seat and low because of the pillarless design.

How tall are you? My seatbelt fits me perfectly and I'm about 6 foot.

CLK 550
Personally, I find the seatbelts very comfortable in my CLK. I have driven Hondas and Acuras before my Mercedes, and with those cars, I always had an issue with the seatbelt cutting across my neck. But with the CLK, I have no issues.

Per 500AMG's comments, perhaps it's a height issue. Or perhaps it the way you lean when you drive.

They do sell seatbelt covers, so you may want to look into getting one of those. That should help to improve your overall comfort level.

I'm 5'6"...so you're right it might be a height issue.

I think it may be a height issue, because the front isn't height adjustable. If it's getting into your neck, that would be a great saftey risk in an accident. Perhaps the dealer can help in some way? Maybe raise the seat? Just throwing out ideas.

The only uncomfortable thing I noticed about the seat belts right away, is that when you drive with the window down all the way, the seat belt flaps like crazy and annoys my arm. It is otherwise quite comfortable (I'm 6'2").

The flapping is really annoying...the front driver and passenger isn't too bad, but if you've had say 4 ppl all buckled in the back 2 belts are absolutely horrible!

Thanks for your suggestions.

I bought a sheepskin seat belt cover which prevents the belt from chaffing my neck, but the belt is still very tight. The shoulder belt has too much tension and is so tight on my shoulder that it causes pain. I brought the car by the dealer and one of the service reps. looked at it and he determined that nothing obvious is wrong with the seat belt. I'm currently waiting for a call from the service manager to discuss my concerns over the seat belt.

I'm curious does anyone here under 5'11" own a 2003 CLK...any women? What do you think of the seat belts? I know it's not just me saying it's too tight because I had several friends sit in it and they noticed that same thing.

The car is great, but the seat belt is putting a damper on the whole experience

Interesting that you mention this because I just noticed that on page 33 of the 2003 CLK brochure that I have and on the MBUSA web site it states for the 320, 500 and AMG versions that “Front seat belts include height-adjustable shoulder belts and lower points attached to seat frames.” This is obviously an error, I'm surprised they haven't caught it yet!

I am 5' 8" and my seatbelts are very comfortable. But have you tried raising your seat? That should help.
