Yes, "comfort" mode starts in 2nd gear. You can force it to downshift to first, but you either have to slam the accelerator into the kick-down button or use the TouchShift to force it into 1st gear. If you want better throttle response, leave it in "Sport" mode. By the way, if you like do burn-outs, it's possible to completely deactivate ESP by putting it in "dyno" mode. To do this, turn the ignition to position 1, and then immediately press the reset stalk three time quickly. This should access the special menu where you can use the menu up/down buttons to access the "dyno" mode and then use +/- to turn it "on". This will totally deactivate ESP - both the braking and throttle-reduction functions.

kbahl21 how do you do that i bought the car with 20 thousand miles when i first got it the response with the gas peddle was right on and now it laggs a tad bit but when i put it on sport its good when it s on comfort it does that

Rudeney that sounds pretty cool but now that its almsot winter i wont be taking it out as much i will try that out even though i really dont like burnign out i just do it at times for fun but for some reason on comfort when i take it off traction it doesnt burn out like it did before maybe i messed something up i dont kno about but nothing popped up on the dash board so im just wondering why it doesn't burn out on comfort like it did before

Since its a 2009 model, its still under warranty. Bring it into the dealer and let them fix it.

CLK Coupe W209 200K
Some ppl find this useful:

1. Turn ignition to position 2 (don't start the engine)

2. hit the kickdown position with the pedal and hold this position for 5secs

3. turn ignition to position 0 (don't pull out the key), take your foot off the pedal

4. wait around 2mins till system is restarted

--> gearbox should now work like the way it did when you bought the car.

^ good idea. i was about to post "do an ecu reset"

it should reset the ecu and allow it to adapt within 200 shifts to a way you like driving.

What sort of burnouts were you able to do in comfort, or are you able to do in sport? I have the same engine as you, and if I turn off ESP with the dash button (not fully off in the submenu) I cannot do anything I would describe as a burnout on a normal dry street. I can get a chirp at most, but the computer cuts the power so you are right at the limit of adhesion and it just grips and goes. Are you able to do real, white smokey burnouts?

Ok thanks perry I'm gooing to try it out

And yidney I kno what you mean it goes and than shorts and catches grip ur supposed to esp off and slowly but firmly hit the gas that way it keeps it strong cause when I step on the peddle at ful force it does a little burnout and has that short where it stops and catches grip I did full donuts by slowly graduating the peddle this way it keeps the spinning going when you stomp on the peddle with full force it just makes the car whip and not do full donuts but the roll on burnouts u don't need to use the brake you just gradually force the peddle down at a good speed and force hope I was able to help you out..

there is no signal or somethin like that.. should work when you keep the 5secs & 2mins in your mind.. it doesn't exist a guarantee for that but for many ppl it worked this way

This "ECU reset" actually erases the driver adaptations of the transmission. Basically, the car tries to learn the driver's driving style and adapt to it. A better way to do this is to spend a bit of driving time with your foot buried on the accelerator.

As for ESP, on the V8 engines, just disabling it with the dash button is probably enough for most people. I hate it when I need to hammer the accelerator to pull out in traffic and it cuts the throttle, so I often shut it off when doing such a maneuver. I did this a few weeks ago in the rain (really, just for fun) and I did a huge fish-tail coming out of the office parking lot. Luckily, there was no traffic and I was able to control things, but it could have been ugly.

for anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of a reset!

Because I really can't bury the throttle on my daily drives, I reset the TCU once in a while. Did it yesterday and this morning's drive in really woke me up! Ahhh, that felt good!

Only thing I can respond to is the last question, and that is answered in #8 of this thread.

Everything I've read in the forums leads me to believe that #8 procedure is for the transmission control unit reset. It seems to cause the transmission to shift different, i.e., holds in each gear longer. That said, it sure feels like it does something else, too. Real touchy on the throttle!

Anyone know for sure? I should do it once a week, because my 8 mile trip to or from work takes 20-25 minutes, and that should tell you what kind of granny-traffic I'm in!

Off topic; I also, oddly, see better mileage on the computer when I drive 'aggressively'. e.g., 16.7 vs. 19.7. Explain that!

It is a TCU reset. What happens is that in granny mode, the transmission upshifts sooner unless you hold the accelerator down. After the reset, it reverts to default mode which means the accelerator doesn't have to be held down so long to hold 1st gear.

SW Florida - say no more! Really, another way to do this is use the TouchShift to force the gear to hold longer - that will also "program" the transmission to a more aggressive mode.

Actually, the best MPG can be attained accelerating as quickly as possibly with full-throttle, then backing off immediately when reaching cruising speed. Then it just takes a mile or two of cruising to erase the fuel usage from that acceleration. Larger, higher-output engines are especially efficient when driven this way. The caveat is stop-and-go traffic where you never spend time cruising - in that case, those "jack rabbit" starts will cost you.
