"C" and "S" driving options.... I'm a noobie :)
"Never change the program mode when the gear selector lever is out of park position P. This could result in a change of driving characteristics for which you may not be prepared."

The tranny may still start off in 1st while in the C mode if you floor it from a stand still
S starts the car off in 1st - more torque - faster accel
S allows gears to hold longer before shifting - go fast
S MAY also hold gears longer on downshifts/backing off the throtle during spirited driving - anticipating that you may still want to go fast after you get through that curve or make that turn.....
The increased torque can surprise you and cause you to lose control if you're not prepared for it in a given situation; hence MB says don't go changing into S when on the move. It doesn't harm the tranny or engine but it may harm you if not prepared.
