So what is decent mileage for a used W209, assuming normal maintenance and driving? Is 100K miles something to keep clear of? I want to buy one in Switzerland, where cars tend to be adequately maintained and not very abused.

Hi Alex - These things can do a hell of a mileage if properly maintained. I think I might be more inclined to buy with a max 100K Km's.
These cars have lost some value with the launch of the E Coupe/Cab which I think is ugly.
I picked up my car with 15K Km's/9.8K miles at a large discount and as new.
Good luck!
ps - Stay away from early facelift models late 2005/2006/early 2007. Some early cars had trouble with the 7G autobox & the balancer shaft sprocket wearing on early M272/273 engines. Of course you can get the diesels & 4 Cyl models there.
5 speed models with M112/113 engines are bullet proof as are 2008/09 models.
They are truly lovely cars to own & drive.

As other cars, I think it all depends on the maintenance of the previous owner.
My 2004 CLK320 has more than 150k miles and it's still driving great. I follow the regular maintenance service schedule and fix whatever breaks. As for exterior and interior maintenance, I use Meguiars products religiously.
Because of the high mileage, i am thinking now to change the flex disc, engined mounts and various bushings of the control arms.

Thanks guys. This car will see about 8k miles per year, worst case... most likely a lot less. So I'm thinking that getting something with less than 100K miles on it will give me a few years of depreciation-free enjoyment.
Any particular model years or engines to get stay away from? I think what's accessible here is 200 Kompressor, 240, 270cdi and 320.

Then you are looking pre 2005 facelift.
Go 240/270/320. All good.
I would stay away from the M271 4 banger. Too many niggles.
European motoring scribes have always considered the 240 petrol & 270 CDi to be the pick of the crop. 320 is just a larger capacity 240 M112. 240 = 2.6 litre & 320 3.2 litre. Only niggle with the 5 speed transmission is the electrohydraulic pilot bush which leaks now & again. $10 part with external replacement.
