I have a 2004 CLK55 AMG which I actually installed the later year 2007 3 slat grill with no problem, so I suspect you should be able to go the other way.
The 3 slat grill requires a different top plastic mount than the 4 slat AMG grill.

The factory part won't fit, but you could fabricate something from aftermarket cross-hatch grille material. I bought a sheet of it to fabricate mesh to cover the old round fog light opening when I went with the L-shaped LED light bar DRLs.

If you do attempt it, take some photos and do a DIY. I've wanted to remove my lower grille forever, so I can wrap it in body-color vinyl and change out my foglight bulbs, but I KNOW I'll break clips without a DIY....
