Yep - see above ^^^ I just pasted the original VIN you had without the "F",but put it in EPC when I did the search, so that's it (so yours is good).

WDDGF5EB8AR104100 has M272 #31-355684. It is far beyond the affected range. The W204 will not be affected, nor will any MY2010 - the problem range are M272 engines through mid-MY2007.

WDBUF87J96X198539 is a MY2006 - so you know the engine will be in the range for possible failure - it's M272 #230723.

I think that 9th digit is an "8" not a "B". If so, then you have M273 engine #111251, which is beyond the problem range.

And no worries about the time, it takes me literally just a few seconds to cut and paste a VIN into EPC to get the engine serial number.

Whats up guys? I just purchased a 2006 Mercedes CLK500 and Its my first mercedes. I have been a Honda and Acura buff for so long. I really want to lower it and put some wheels on it...only thing is it rides so well.... Rudeney seems to know a lot about these cars. What could I do to make the car look a little more sporty? Oh yea, my car has a SRS light on...thats about it.

Welcome, may want to do some searching, both of these topics are well covered...wheels are a good start and lots have lowered... I just had my 3 resonators deleted (some call 2 of them secondary cats).. Exhaust sounds much better...good luck...and id start your own thread if you have specific questions

Looking at 2009 CLK 550 and worried about issues discussed above. Can you please check the VIN and let me know if the car is in the range of balance shaft and or idle gear problems:
WDBTK72F09T103866. Car has 66,437 miles if that makes any difference. Thank you so much.

No worries at all about the balance shaft on a MY2009 - WDBTK72F09T103866 has M273 engine #289440 - way beyond the affected range.

No - the last M273 engine for idler gear failure was #88611. And when we say "balance shaft failure", what we really mean is "timing chain idler sprocket failure". On the M272 V6, the idler sprocket is a forged part of the balance shaft. It does double-duty by driving the balance shaft and "idling" the timing chain where it runs down to the bottom of the "V" between the camshafts. On the M273 V8, it has no balance shaft (it's not needed as V8's are inherently balanced) so the sprocket is just bolted onto the engine block to "idle" the chain.

Rodney: I really appreciate your clarification. Was afraid of this car due to previous issues. I'll give it serious consideration now.

Rodney, can you check one more VIN for me? The car I was looking at has a bunch of issues such as the intake manifold tumbler being broken. My service advisor has recommend looking at another vehicle.

Can you check this VIN for me: WDBUF87X39B383000

06 E350
Rodney, I own a 06 E350 that has 118,000 miles on it now.
WDBUF87JI6X195327.
I am looking at a 06 CLK350 with only 89,000 miles.
WDBTJ56J66F170777.
Am I living dangerously here? I didn't even know about this balance shaft failure until I started looking round for the CLK.
Your help gratefully appreciated.
Thanks.
Stephen
